RE: Aquitania

Hi, thanks for the message i am trying to find the evidence about the Aquitania design, i think it is mentioned in one of the former Cunard commodore autobiographies (possibly Harry Grattidge) - when i find it i will let you know!

Kickermaru[edit]

Hi. Do you know the name of the maritime site that listed the Kichemaru shipwreck [1]? If you know the site name or domain, it might be possible to recover the info as someone might have archived it or it might be on archive.org. Ha! (talk) 04:22, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I've created an article on the SS Dakota that you mentioned in the AfD. Ha! (talk) 00:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
see reply to User_talk:Koplimek#Kickermaru. Ha! (talk) 14:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I liked the link to the image [2] of the Dakota that you added (then removed) from the Project Gutenberg site. If it's from Project Gutenberg, isn't it very likely to copyright free and so able to be added to the article directly (like in an info box). Do you know what book it came from on Project Gutenberg. There's also an image here [3], although that one says it was scanned in 1999 and you need to pay for copies of it so it can't be used. I think the source they come from will be public though, so it's just a case of finding a copy that someone scanned or photographed and didn't copyright.

++ I found a whole bunch more links by searching for Steamship Dakota instead of SS Dakota (why I didn't think of that before I don't know). There should be a fair bit to build the article up

I was also thinking that a page should be opened up on Dakota's identical sister ship "Minnesota" who saw a longer service life up to 1923. Minnesota was also called "Troy" during her World War One service.Koplimek (talk) 17:07, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, good idea - go for it. If I find anything I'll it your way. If you need a hand creating the article I'll be glad to help. Ha! (talk) 22:13, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since no one signed I'll assume it's Ha. I removed the Gutenberg photo (I liked it too) cause there was copyright problems even though there shouldn't be since the photo is from 1907 and way before the 1923 cutoff year for copyrighted pictures. I found the sharper Dakota photo on Google Images by typing in "Dakota Steamship" just like you were doing. I agree 'SS Dakota" doesn't always work. Sometimes you get different results by typing "S.S. Dakota". i didn't think there'd be a problem with just 'linking' the photo as opposed to uploadingit onto Wikipedia without permission. Thankfully the photo exists in a number of versions in contrasty to sharp versions. Koplimek (talk) 17:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As you say, it's OK to add a link to it, as long as it's not displayed as a photo in the article it can't break any copyright. I've seen a couple of different images (maybe some of them were just flipped around or mirror images actually) of the Dakota sinking on postcards, there seem to be a few of them around. Ha! I've just added a {{cn}} request for " As it was a single pump was used to vacate water from different compartments with the use of a nozzled hose". Can you remember where this came from?--Old Moonraker (talk) 23:49, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citations for List of suicides[edit]

I've started a discussion here. (Actually, it's a restart of a prior discussion that went cold; you can just scroll directly down to my most recent post in that section if you want.) Can you offer your thoughts? It's very important. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 00:40, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes, but that's not what the discussion in that section is about. It's about whether list-type articles should have sources cited in them just as any other article. Can you read my last post at the bottom of it and give your opinion there? I'd really appreciate it. Nightscream (talk) 00:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

February 2010[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Zeffie Tilbury has been reverted.
Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. I removed the following link(s): http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=b (matching the regex rule \bmyspace\.com). If the external link you inserted or changed was to a blog, forum, free web hosting service, or similar site, then please check the information on the external site thoroughly. Note that such sites should probably not be linked to if they contain information that is in violation of the creator's copyright (see Linking to copyrighted works), or they are not written by a recognised, reliable source. Linking to sites that you are involved with is also strongly discouraged (see conflict of interest).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. The article The Devil's Pass Key (1920 film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Appears to fail WP:NFILM.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 12:38, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Miss Morris[edit]

Hi. 6 march 2009 you edited the lusitania article and added a detail about ships sunk by U20 before lusitania, here [4]. Ive just been reading Beesly, Room 40, p 102 where he observes that U 20 sank a three masted schooner clalled 'the earl ot lathom'. i was wondering therefore about the discrepancy and where your list of names comes from? Sandpiper (talk) 22:05, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Now all I have to worry about is whether its Lathom (as Beesly has it) or lataham as it also appears elsewhere. Sandpiper (talk) 21:18, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome. We're quite appreciative that you have chosen to write an article for Wikipedia, but there are a few concerns in White Gold (1927 film) that you might consider addressing. For film articles, it's not enough to show that the film simply exists. It is always best to show through references that the subject has received critical review and/or coverage in multiple sources in order to meet notability criteria for films. First and foremost is proper sourcing for the article, as Wikipedia requires that information in articles be cited back to reliable sources (not blogs, not facebook, not twitter, not myspace, not IMDB). Please consider visiting my essay on films to see how to gauge if your article meets inclusion criteria. And always feel free to ask for input or advice from editors at WikiProject Films on the project's talk page. Best regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 05:53, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Koplimek. I saw the The Incorrigible Dukane article while I was patrolling new pages, If you can increase the article length to 1500 characters of prose (so not including the references or infobox) then it would make a good WP:DYK candidate as the oldest surviving John Barrymore film. It would need a better reference than ImDb mind... Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 10:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Legagneux[edit]

You recently mentioned diff that Legagneux committed suicide, rather than having died in an accident. Do you have a reliable source for this? In Popular Mechanics Feb. 1915 on page 195 his name is listed as a aviation-related death on 6 July 1914. Are you saying that he committd suicide by deliberately crashing his aircraft? If you have a reliable source stating that this is the case, it would be very interesting, since I have been unable to confirm this via online sources. Thanks. --TraceyR (talk) 10:39, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link, which states "... il se tue à Saumur en tombant dans la Loire en essayant un avion, victime de sa passion."
My knowledge of French regrettably leaves a lot to be desired, but my understanding of this sentence is that "he died at Saumur when he crashed into the Loire while testing an aeroplane, a victim of his passion" (i.e. for flying). I came across this reply to a question about whether "se tuer" implies suicide:
Re: "se tuer" vs "se suicider"
In English there is usually no difference between to commit suicide and to kill one's self
He killed himself by taking poison.
se tuer - accidentally kill one's self
"Il s'est tué en voiture" would mean "He was killed in a car accident".
Based on this, and the fact that no other source mentions suicide, I don't think that we can claim that Legagneux commited suicide. --TraceyR (talk) 00:46, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I'd had some in the works and your refs did help. I just thought he was a fascinating character. If I find anymore, I'll put it on the page. The picture of Bellew in a dress [6] is real as far as I know (even though Bain News Service can be somewhat unreliable). I think it was for his role in 1902's "School for Scandal" or 1910's "The Scandal" where he had to dress in drag briefly, but he sure looks good for a 60-year-old man! The later play was a critical flop, but must have been somewhat entertaining. I also nominated the article for DYK. Froggerlaura (talk) 15:47, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Film director categories[edit]

Well, for what it's worth, I created the category because it was already sitting as a redlink on seven or eight film articles (which isn't supposed to happen, as categories aren't supposed to be added to articles until they actually exist, but I digress). For what it's worth, any filmmaker who's directed a reasonable number of films that have Wikipedia articles of their own is allowed to have a comparable category, so there's no reason why you couldn't create one for Chautard as well — but for Chester Franklin, I'd suggest concentrating on an actual article about him before worrying about whether there's a dedicated category for his films or not. Fun times...[edit]

All but one. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:27, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bloggers in the outside world are not nearly as concerned with copyright and attribution as we are at Wikipedia. For The Isle of Lost Ships (1923 film) someone had made a collage of multiple images. And while the collage assemblage itself might be the intellectual property of the blogger, the included original poster from Associated First National is not. So I used an online tool to remove the unattributed-by-blogger image and present it as the single poster intended, shared by, and properly attributed to Associated First National. And while happy you solved the Flickr problem, look at the cautions on THIS page. Certainly the Flicker user could not assert a copyright on someone else's work, but that does not prevent them from tagging images uploaded there with a "all rights reserved" tag and locking it from download. It would seem that Flicker does not investigate misuse of such tags. I felt it better to avoid that can of worms.

And as you are so proactive in preserving early cinematic history, might you consider being a coordinator for WikiProject Films? We need more editors who have a grasp of the importance of preserving film heritage. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 18:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Single Wives requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Southseascinema.org[edit]

Please do not add links to this website to the "See also" section of article, since this section is only for links to other Wikipedia articles. The proper place for them to go is in the "External links" section, and I would appreciate your moving the ones you've already posted.

It's also possible that your link may not be acceptable under our external links policy, but I'm not going to pass judgment on that. You should just be aware that another editor may decide that your links are spam and remove them entirely because of that. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article request[edit]

Hello Koplimek. First I want to compliment you on the huge amount of work that you have done adding and editing silent film articles here at WikiP. My request regards this article The White Flower. There is an external link for a foreign film poster that uses the title Havaii Girls but there is no mention of this alternate title in the article. I am wondering if you can add a bit of info about this with a proper source. If not no worries I will just leave things as they are but I thought that with your excellent research skills you might be able to enhance the article. Thanks for your time and thanks again for all your efforts here. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 21:23, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I guessed that the poster was for TWF but that there was some quirk to the translation. I think that you have figured things out. My only concern was that another editor might remove the link since there was no info about this alternate title in the body of the article. On the other hand that might never happen. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my request. MarnetteD | Talk 01:28, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comment. Her birth year came from the 1949 John Adams Comstock genealogy book. I've also seen 1868 listed as her year of birth as well as 1873. Lightnin’ and The Silent Voice[edit]

Blériot[edit]

Hi. Just seen your addition to this page, and I have some concerns. It's interesting material certainly, but I'm not sure that so much detail is necessary in an article which is a biography of Blériot: possibly it could be added in this detail to Daily Mail aviation prizes, and also to the article on the Wright Brothers. I also have concerns about its accuracy: for instance there's a 3 Nov 1908 letter from Wilbur to Orville in which he talks of the prize, saying that winning it would "practically end the necessity for further demonstations next year", so the £1000 cannot really be called 'paltry'. I also don't think it's very well integrated into the article: it leaves the para about the Channel having been crossed by balloon as a non-sequiter. Imo the topic would be best integrated into the para about his rivals for the crossing. TheLongTone (talk) 22:45, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Melbourne MacDowell and South River, New Jersey[edit]

Regarding Melbourne MacDowell and South River, New Jersey, there seems to be no source associating him with South River, either in his article or in the article for South River, and a source is required in both places. Do you have any source to support the claim that Little Washington became South River, and can that source be added, as well? When you add the source for McDowell in the South River article, can I ask you to put the entry in alphabetical order? Alansohn (talk) 00:45, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for reordering by alpha. Can you add a source for McDowell to the South River article? The Strang source would be appropriate, and it would be even more useful if you had a version of the source that was available online, perhaps through Google Books. I do see versions of the book online, but perhaps you know of an online accessible version of the specific 1899 version. Thanks again. Alansohn (talk) 01:46, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • WP:LISTPEOPLE specifies that notables included in articles, like the one for South River, are to have reliable and verifiable sources establishing a connection between the person and the place. I'd always prefer a source that can be confirmed by clicking a link, rather than by searching in an archive for a book more than 100 years old and long out of print, but the one thing that's needed is a reliable and verifiable source. The source should be added as soon as possible, otherwise WP:LISTPEOPLE specifies that the entry should be removed. Alansohn (talk) 03:21, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: On Record[edit]

Hi. We've gone through this before. If a film is lost, a reliable source should say so. If the only source you can find says the status is unknown, that's not lost and it should not be categorized as such. I asked this on the film Wikiproject and was told the exact same thing. If you want to seek a new consensus about it or bring the topic back up on the Wikiproject page, feel free to do so and I'll even add my two cents again but I don't think saying "it's well known that the film is lost" is how we should go about categorizing films. Film articles are held to the same standards as other articles and I'm sure I can't go to any page here, add some content I think I know to be true without a source and expect others to take my word. I know sources exist that support this kind of information because I've found them myself for numerous articles. Pinkadelica 19:14, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I understand your last message. It's not semantics to say a film is lost. Lost means just that - its whereabouts are unknown. I wouldn't say a lost person is dead just because I don't know where the person is. I can presume they're dead after a reasonable amount of absence but I cannot definitively say the person is gone forever unless there is proof. As I said above, I asked the community and was told we don't say a film is lost unless a reliable source says so. That's pretty clear to me but if you want to debate this, let's open it back up the community because it seems like you think this is my personal opinion and I'm pulling this "rule" out of the air for kicks. I'm not trying to give you a hard time about this but we obviously don't see eye to eye and some sort of common ground needs to be reached before this goes forward. Film infobox[edit]

Hello Koplimek! I have to commend you on all of the article creation you have been doing. A very impressive line of work! I just have a question for you. Where are you getting the {{Infobox film}} parameters from? It looks like you may be using an old template, since we now use "name" in place of "title" and "image size" in place of "imagesize". Not a huge concern but it is causing some funky things to happen, like The White Sister (1915 film) has the disambiguator in the infobox when it shouldn't. I would also point you to the use of the "screenplay", "story" and "based on" parameters. We have moved towards using these more specific parameters when in the past we would use parenthetical modifiers in the "writer" parameter. Let me know if you have questions. Re: film posters[edit]

Sorry this is sort of late. Had to be out of town for a bit without laptop and internet access. Still have some RL things going on but will try to get up to speed again soon. When it comes to determining if the poster is post-1923 public domain, it depends on either the film company didn't mark their posters as copyrighted, or in the case of the poster having a copyright, that the film was not renewed by the movie company.

We have quite a few posters here which are licensed as non-free; when I'm able to find a large enough copy that hasn't been cropped so I can see if there are really any copyright marks or not, I'll change the license and upload a larger copy of the poster. If you're interested, there are some films whose posters do have copyright marks but when you get hold of a large enough copy of the lobby cards for the film, the movie company didn't copyright the lobby cards. ;) When Subway Sadie was at FA review, it had a very small copy of the film's poster. I couldn't find anything large enough to prove that the poster didn't have a copyright mark, but a very nice, large lobby card for the lost film did surface and it's what you see in the infobox there. :) I keep looking and either change licenses when I can or if I find something we don't have and it's not marked, I upload the poster or lobby card.
