Notice

The article List of radiata animal orders has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

'Radiata' is not comparable to 'Bilateria' as it is not a clade, is obsolete, and historically was defined in different ways at different times, so 'formerly classified as Radiata' gives an undefinable list which cannot correctly be combined with modern classes, subclasses, and orders, it's totally misleading.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:16, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RichardWeiss, thanks for letting me know you intend to address the issues. However, I do not believe they are addressable, for the reasons given in the quote above. That makes clear that in my view the article is irreparable, since it combines a vague, multiply-defined historical grouping, known for a century to be unsatisfactory, with modern taxa that are not compatible with the obsolete historical group(s). The article therefore has no definable scope, and is constructed on unsound principles. Rather than rush straight to AfD, however, I'd be curious to know how you intend to fix the article? Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:40, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to trouble you again. I've added a table of alternative definitions to Radiata, which I think says pretty much all that is needed on the topic. The varying definitions at phylum level shown in the table illustrate exactly why I think the idea of creating a list at (modern) order level to be a non-starter. Nomination of List of radiata animal orders for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of radiata animal orders is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of radiata animal orders until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:20, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open[edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:54, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About your recent edit in which you placed an NPOV template. Please consider posting on the article talk page to explain your concern. This is recommended by Template:NPOV#When to use. Since you have made a similar edit on about fifteen articles it seems that the time is ripe for a discussion. A possible location would be at WT:SPAIN. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 15:07, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I opened the thread at Puigdemont within 5 mins of tagging. WP:SPAIN may be the better place. This edit by User:Hispalois was the first, I simply followed in their footsteps with the subsequent 15 or so, and got reverted at Puigdemont, hence the tag and thread there. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 16:16, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, RichardWeiss. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ScienceLad123[edit]

Hi RichardWeiss, I noticed that you in good faith reverted a number of edits by an IP who seemed to be wikihounding ScienceLad123. Thanks for that, as it does look like the IP's reverts were out of line. However, it turns out that ScienceLad123 is actually a sock of long-term abusive editor Shingling334, who is blocked from editing Wikipedia, whether their edits are helpful or not. I wanted to let you know that I will be reverting them again on that basis. In particular, the change of the photos in the Istanbul Airport article has already been made several times, all by multiple socks of the same blocked user, so I'd ask you not to reinstate it. If you feel strongly that any of the edits should stand, please get consensus on the article's talk page to reinstate it, and/or ping me about it... --IamNotU (talk) 22:02, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why is this a required delinking? ViperSnake151  Talk  19:01, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's in MoS, not linking in quotes is standard practice. You are experienced enough to know this. If you can link outside the quote do so. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 19:07, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MoS does not outright prohibit linking in quotes, it says to use them conservatively, and "link only to targets that correspond to the meaning clearly intended by the quote's author". Woke is a prominent term but somewhat obscure in this context. ViperSnake151  Talk  19:12, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly and this is a classic bad use of a link in quotes. We can't say what the speaker intended in this case. Woke is a somewhat obscure term full stop, I have no objection to it being linked to outside the quote. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 19:14, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Valtònyc, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Público (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Deletion discussion about Rural poverty in Canada[edit]

Hello, RichardWeiss,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Arthistorian1977 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Rural poverty in Canada should be deleted. Your comments are welcome over Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rural poverty in Canada .

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Arthistorian1977}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know you afd'd the article, I am hapy to support your afd but don't need to be informed about how Afds work, I figured that out many years ago. I didn't create the article content, which came form rural poverty, I don't object to the article being deleted but I would strongly object to the material being restored to the rural poverty article, have a nice day. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 15:10, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October![edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

Thanks for letting me know you PRODed it. I have never seen a less well-suited candidate for PRODing in 16 years on the project but I see someone else agreed with me and removed the PROD, which I certainly would have done if the other editor hadn't. Please learn to distinguish between an unnotable and an unref'd article and don't treat them the same. This could be construed as an attempt to discourage our coverage of Guatemala, a country which needs more and not less coverage, but I'm going to assume good faith. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 16:48, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Peter Hitchens[edit]

Hi Richard, please see Peter Hitchens talk page. The issue here is that his views cannot be exposed (for example, his anti-vaxxer pieces or his pieces apposing healh measures to protect the public from COVID) without citing primary sources. The result of not allowing the page to cite his views is Wikipedia will present an incomplete account of his views, conveniently enabling him to hide what he has written about science and medicine in the past. What do you see as the solution, if not allowing people to cite his views as published in national media such as the Daily Mail?Men2ge4zhong3 (talk) 11:30, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hitchens has nothing to do with this article (he's blocked) so hardly convenient for him. But we aren't trying to expose him either. The article needs to include his complete views which have 3rd -party sources. We mustn't just list his beliefs which aren't verified by 3rd-party sources because such views do not pass our notability threshold. We provide a full list of his views covered in reliable 3rd-party sources, which is what we should be doing. And anyone can add new views with 3rd-party sources. I care about the sources, I don't care about the views. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 20:30, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
1) You may think his account or address blocked, but obviously cannot be sure he is not active. It seems odd that you would state this with such certainty, as if you have some personal knowledge of the subject. I personally doubt he is inactive (and one of the admins who is suspiciously interested in this one page showed some distinctive similarities to Peter's idiosyncracies of prose), but let us for the sake of focusing on the main point assume you are right, and neither he nor proxies are doing anything to the page, and it is independent third parties who are vigorously cultivating his page with uncited details about his private life and describing him as "staunchly principled" (as his intro read, until yesterday). 2) What I have appealed to you to recognise is that the *existence* of something can just be pointed to. To show someone's article in the Daily Mail does *not* endorse the Daily Mail's credibility. It just observes the Daily Mail's and the article's existence. However, even if we have a ban on even showing that the Daily Mail or its articles exist, there are more problems with the logic of your removal. 3) The same standards are not being applies to other sections. The COVID section has no citations in the first two paragraphs, yet you let them stand. The later paragraphs include citations such as unknown outlets (Joe, with a fraction of the readership of the Daily Mail) and YouTube (yet a registered GP's letter in the BMJ is 'user generated'?). Can you humour me, and help me out as I retain my assumption that you are acting in good faith? Men2ge4zhong3 (talk) 21:04, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean I think? User:Clockback is blocked, this is public knowledge. And what do you mean, I can't be sure he is not active? If you have any evidence that he is active ask for a sock check, otherwise stay quiet because you are digging yourself in a hole with bizarre claims that violate our BLP and assume good faith policies. I couldn't care less what your suspicious mind thinks but unless you keep your suspicions to yourself or make a sock check you are in danger of being reported and blocked yourself. If you think Hitchens is an admin that would make a sock check more necessary than ever but I doubt you believe your own rhetoric. I also suggest you get a grip on our policies which you clearly haven't understood based on this statement. The credibility of the Mail is not a subject of any interest either to me or to the article in question. There are no problems with the logic of my removal unless you choose to ignore, or fail to understand, how things work here. We demand 3rd-party sources and not reliance on primary sources for every article, particularly in bios of living people. You better believe I am acting in good faith and simply saying what I have been saying for years concerning this article which is that the notability threshold for Hitchens' beliefs is 3rd-party sources as that is what Wikipedia requires, their threshold not my personal invention. YouTube is certainly user-generated and I have no issues with the Mail (some do) my issue is that these are Hitchens' views and thus primary sources and thus do not demonstrate notability. I will help you out. Read Wikipedia:Reliable sources esp the Questionable and self-published sources section, and when you understand it, come back and we can chat further. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 19:40, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rastafari[edit]

I noticed that the Rastafari article has made it to FA, which got me thinking about the fight to not call that article Rastafarianism. Which lead me back to the archives of that talk page. I'm really glad you started that campaign, long before our policies recognised the need to treat articles about people with compassion, especially people in the developing world. That we were more than just items of study. I really appreciate the work you did to drive that change. And given the power of Wikipedia in shaping discourse these days, I think it's important it happened when it did. So a belated "thank you!"

Hope things are well with you (or as well as can be hoped) these days. Guettarda (talk) 22:15, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Guettarda:. Nice to hear from you. I am now in Spain with three children, five stepchildren and my Honduran partner. Sadly my father died 2 weeks ago, not of covid and at home and I can't even go to England so life is reasonably tough right now. Sounds great about Rastafari, I will take a look. Hope you and your family are well. Kind regards, ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 19:28, 13 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
