Illustrator Substubs[edit]

Hi there. I notice that you've been adding a whole lot of substubs on illustrators (eg: Lou Myers). Please provide more information than "XXX is an illustrator" when you create new articles: Even something on what they illustrated, which country they illustrate in, anything to give the article some value, and to substantiate what you've written (right now, for all anyone knows, you made up the names). Rather wait until you have information on a topic before creating the article: If someone clicked Randompage, and got that, they might have quite a poor opinion of the Wikipedia. (Sorry if this sounds a little harsh). --Kieran 16:04, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Isaac Asimov article[edit]

Actually, note that it wasn't 63.202.21.27 that vandalised the Asimov article, it was 65.15.241.10. Also, leaving messages on user_talk pages is more customary. Alai 04:38, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Stubs[edit]

Hello! Thanks for your contributions. I just noted that you occasionally add a tag to articles with a format such as something-stub. This is good, but please make sure the something-stub template exists before you add it, otherwise the article will have a weird red link at the end that doesn't have anything do with stubs. If it doesn't exist, you can create it yourself and then add it — but please do this before you add it to the article. Thanks! OvenFresh² 00:22, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello there. Thank you for editing the article Circumcision and Media Ethics which is listed on VFD. Please feel free to vote on this issue. Thank you very much for your contribution to this article. Sirkumsize 03:07, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

illustrators[edit]

I have a suggestion: Rather than create lots of sub-stubs that only say "so-and-so is an illustrator", why not create better articles for fewer people - tell what sort of an illustrator, where he/she is based, for how long they've worked and for whom - and particularly, telling why this illustrator should be featured in wikipedia when millions and millions of others aren't! That will help make sure your work surivives, too: Really short articles like this are sometimes taken as "vanity" pieces and deleted on sight! - DavidWBrooks 15:57, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I would echo that point. If you have a list you are using, why not create that list with red links. Link to the list from suitable articles. And write longer pieces about the individuals where you can. Don't just write "Xxxxx Y. Zzzzz is an illustrator". Ever. Otherwise I will assume you are just writing about your friends and contacts, and may remove the substubs on sight. --Henrygb 01:00, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I would also echo that point, with an extra incentive... IMO these minimal substubs qualify for speedy deletion, under articles case #1. See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cliff Condak, and I'd guess Steve Karchin and the others will not be far behind. So the result of your efforts is likely to be a waste of a lot of people's time, including your own. Andrewa 06:57, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary[edit]

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

And thank you for your great work in classifying stubs. Oleg Alexandrov 16:09, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The article is in no way related to India. So the stub sorting done is completely wrong. I do understand the good-natured effort, but it is like assigning a France-stub to a Germany related article, which is incorrect. --Ragib 04:41, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Name-stub[edit]

Hi Hailey - I note you've created a new stub category. Did you realise that stub categories should normally be cleared by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting before creation? That way they can be vetted to check that there are a viable number of stubs (at least 60-100) and that the category does not cross the existing stub hierarchy before the stub is created.

If you can provide any information on why these stubs were created, please add a note to entry for these stubs at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria#Newly-discovered stub categories giving the reason for the stubs. In addition, if there is any Wikiproject associated with these stubs add that information.

In the case of name-stub it looks it will be a useful category, but if you're planning to make any more categories, we'd like to know first! Oh, and if you're interested in helping sort stubs, we're always looking for new members of the project!

One more thing - the single most important thing a stub template must have is its own dedicated category. Otherwise, you're just consigning the stubs marked into the void, or worse, sending them back into Category:Stub, which we're trying to clear them from. I have created a Category:Name stubs for the template... Grutness|hello? 07:19, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Mmm. You've been busy, haven't you... ride-stub, tourism-stub, furniture-stub... any more? Grutness|hello? 11:02, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Removing stub tags[edit]

I've seen you remove stub tags from articles without replacing them with something better, although the tags seemed to fit. Examples include Akimoto Tsubasa, Ahmad Zaki, "John Wayne" Edwards, A. K. Fazlul Huq, and Aaron Ruell. In some cases, there was another stub tag left, in other cases, there wasn't. What's the reasoning behind that? Rl 16:34, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Kincardine Bridge stub[edit]

Hi. I noticed you changed Kincardine Bridge from stub to UK-related stub. Just want to mention that the Friarton Bridge entry, which I worked on recently, was made a UK Buildings and Structures stub and you might want to consider using that for Kincardine too? --Erath 13:56, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

more stub stuff[edit]

Hi, Hailey:

I noticed another of your "not-really-a-stub-tag" stub tags on outline. (It was {{writing-stub}}.) I see other editors have already mentioned this to you. I think it would be really nice if you would go through some of the articles you've tagged (check your "User contributions") and retag them with viable stub tags. I've found it personally useful to put a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types on my user page so I have a quick reference to the list of approved stub tags. Thanks, Soundguy99 08:03, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Quick stub tip[edit]

Hi there. You tagged Platonic_epistemology with {{phil-stub}} - a stub type which doesn't exist. I've amended it to {{philosophy-stub}} for you. If you're not sure whether a stub type exists, you can preview the page as normal; and if in doubt then typing the full subject name (eg philosophy and not just phil) will always yield the desired result. Best wishes, reetep 20:00, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Bert Williams[edit]

"In hospital" was not a typo, though it may have been a bit of a Briticism. "In hospital" would be the dominant use in the UK: "in the hospital" would only be used if a particular hospital were at issue. (And I bet your form of English would prefer "was" to "were" in that last sentence. Neither is wrong, these are just matters of language variation.) -- Jmabel | Talk 18:16, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

If you've been wondering where all the article's you started went to...[edit]

Have you read Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion? Specifically, A7: "An article about a real person that does not assert that person's importance or significance." You have created lots of articles of the form "X is a Y." These just get quickly swept up as falling under that category. It would be more pleasent for everyone if you would add them to Wikipedia:Requested articles(you can add glosses, like you have been, to requests there), and stop adding to the load of Speedy Deletions that need to be done. If you have any questions, please let me know on my talk page! JesseW, the juggling janitor 19:58, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Wacky Neighbor[edit]

Hi -- I guess I was taking a small liberty with the term "neighbor." I figured in a show that seldom or never showed anyone's home (Cheers, Barney Miller), certainly there could still be a wacky neighbor -- maybe the wierd guy in the next cubicle, the manager of the restaurant next door, the uniformed officer who wants to be a plainclothes detective, etc. Note The Stuart's comment on 22 August -- he says Joey on Friends isn't a wacky neighbor because he is one of the main characters. So I figured a wacky neighbor could be any supporting or lesser character who is not a main character, and who is kind of quirky. I would argue that Klinger on MASH IS a wacky neighbor: he certainly was quirky, and in such a small "town" as a MASH unit, wasn't everyone a "neighbor"? Same thing with Festus on Gunsmoke: Dodge was a small town. No, it wasn't a sit-com, but the article doesn't state "exclusively in situation comedy." Still, I do respect your opinion on this matter, and I draw my colors. Would it be ok to list "every character other than Oliver and Lisa on Green Acres"? Thanks for uploading Image:4019 1109 1 md.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Request for edit summary[edit]

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 0% for major edits and 7% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 27 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear inpolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 03:35, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Preventing an edit war on the saints[edit]

It was the established operation of the WikiProject Saints to have a section in the info box on a sample prayer. Some editors have been recently been attacking this in the individual articles.

It is my belief that prayers in a literary or historic context are NPOV. I can understand that some may consider the inclusion of a prayer to be hagiographic, but freedom of religion is not freedom from religion.

There is a 3RR about to happen on a number of these articles. I am trying to be philosophical about this, but don’t want to yield the point when what is happening goes against the consensus and borders on vandalism.

It is my understanding that if an editing disagreement occurs that the status quo, in this case leaving the prayers in place, holds until it is resolved. I encourage you to comment on this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Saints. I have posted my thoughts at the village pump.

Just wanted to let you know about a christianity wiki that was recently started and has now moved to it's own server. Because of your interest in the Saints Project and because you are a Lutheran, I think you would be a valuable member of our team and I'd love to have your contributions.

We are just about ready to go live!

As soon as we finalize the CPOV policy, I think we're ready to "go public" with this project and invite the world! We can submit to DMOZ and Google and start getting some real active hits on that site.

Please take a look and see if this project is something you would like to get behind. the URL is: ChristWiki

I will stop removing them, but I ask you in response to please build out the categories themselves. Just adding red category links to pages is only 1/2 the job. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Tony Eubanks, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Beach Blanket Babies, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. First Cut[edit]

A tag has been placed on The First Cut (Rugrats episode), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Half and Susanne Zantop, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. cesarb 23:59, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting Circuses.com on Ankus[edit]

Hi, I wanted to ask you about removing the circuses.com reference on Ankus. I agree that it is propaganda, but it is also the source of some of the information in the article. I think it is better to leave the link there so people can see the nature of the source, rather than leave it looking like some of the hyperbole in the article is unbiased fact. DO you think it might be a good idea to leave it? ThanksMs408 16:38, 24 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Most of that site is one-sided propaganda about how the circus is evil--Hailey 16:39, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry to shoot you down on that image. The FH is on the left and only a bit of the side shows so not really much point in your cropping it either. Maybe you can take another picture? And ask for a tour while you are there - the Church did a nice job restoring it and would be happy to show it to you. not that the cat is terribly important... but the reason it was a blue link was that it's a redirect to Winston Churchill. However, that page doesn't mention the cat at all. That's why I left it in the list.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Images of North Korea, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Images of North Korea has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Images of North Korea, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 11:44, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Rider3.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rider3.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Aksibot 03:36, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Hess (American painter) has been proposed for deletion. An editor felt this person might not be notable enough for an article. Please review Wikipedia:Notability (people) for the relevant guidelines. If you can improve the article to address these concerns, please do so.

If no one objects to the deletion within five days by removing the "prod" template, the article may be deleted without further discussion. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but if an editor is still not satisfied that it meets Wikipedia guidelines, it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Image copyright problem with Image:OldCrow.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:OldCrow.gif. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Notability of Flush-a-byes[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Flush-a-byes, by Mmoneypenny (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Flush-a-byes seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Flush-a-byes, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Flush-a-byes itself. Your character subcategories[edit]

Changing from a broad 1951 (etc.) introduction to something like Characters introduced in 1951 makes some sense except that our naming conventions emphasize that we need to stress the fictional nature of fictional characters. It should be Fictional characters introduced in 1951, etc. Also, if you want the subcats to do more than survive, you ought to discuss the new subcats on the CfD talk page to get feedback and to get more people involved. I support the general idea. Doczilla 05:33, 28 June 2007 (UTC) When/if the change is implemented, it ought to be done more methodically. Build up each year's catory when possible. Articles like List of superhero debuts or List of supervillain debuts can aid methodical implementation. Also, each introduction year category article should have an introductory statement so it won't appear red-lettered on the page of every member article.Doczilla 05:35, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use disputed for Image:MisdemeanorUFO.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MisdemeanorUFO.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:23, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Russell Brand - propaganda[edit]

I noticed you removed references to Russell Brand winning the Sexiest Vegetarian awards from PETA, claiming these were propaganda. These awards may be blatant publicity stunts by PETA but it is nonetheless a fact that Russell received them and refered to them repeatedly on his BBC Radio 2 show. Do we refuse to even acknowledge events that were motivated in this way? Surely it is more appropriate to mention them and add a note allowing readers to judge for themselves. --Chris Wood (talk) 09:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great to see you working on Find-A-Grave L/La![edit]

see you're working here again (you were there before me) - hope you like the breaks I made!

While working on Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave famous people/T, I found that it was much more satisfying to work on a chunk of 20-or-so and feel that I'd finished than to work on a list of 100 and see it shrink by just a little bit each day - that's my reasoning for making them; there's no particular principle behind it!

As the sections get smaller after the prune, we can delete the breaks to make them "conveniently sized" again. Nobody's using these pages for anything but tidying up anyway, so we're reasonably free to do what's best. Feel free to modify!

Have fun! --Alvestrand (talk) 06:10, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Adding Robotics-related articles to the WikiProject
  • Assessing robotics articles listed in Category:Robotics articles by quality
  • Helping out with giving comments to individual articles after assessment, pointers, comments, etc. (basically, don't just give an article class and move on, let people know what led you to give such a rating when necessary.

We need to get this article assessment drive going first before peer reviews and collaborations programs can be made.
