Categorizing people by the political subdividion that existed when they lived
[edit]In general articles should use the accepted scholarly way to refer to a place at the time of the event described, maybe indicating what it is now but saying what it was then. Someone born in 1905 in Konigsburg was born in Germany not Russia. We do fairly well with that, but do not do so well with places not then in France in the 17th-century. We have a huge problem with saying people who died in the 17th-century are from districts ilof Englanf that were not formed until 1974. I have begun to make progress by creating categories for the People by province of France abolished in 1790, since we should not categorize people who died in 1789 or earlier by departments that did not yet exist.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:53, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
Mauritania 2024 Olympics
[edit]There were two competitors at the 2024 Olympics from Mauritania. At present Wikipedia only has an article on one of them. Who was born in France, and did other competitions in France before choosing to compete for Mauritania at the olympics. Mauritania was where his parents are from. The one other competitor from Mauritania at the 2024 olympics does not have an article on Wikipedia.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:01, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
2024 Olympics
[edit]Multiple competitors for the United States at the 2024 olympics lack articles. Since olympic competitors are not default notable this is to be expected. Some have posted statements suggesting we have articles on all competitors for the United States in the olympics who were "post war", it is not clear what war is meant by that statement, but it is false. For the pre-1912 olympics for sure, and maybe even some 1912 or later, there are a large number of olympic competitors whose names are unknown. A few early competitions we do not even know the total number of people who competed.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:45, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- When people say "post-war" in this context, they always mean World War II. Wikipedia is a work in progress, and while there are many articles that don't meet notability guidelines, there will always be more subjects that do meet notability guidelines (because there are an infinite amount of possible article topics in the world, while only a finite number of Wikipedia articles) that don't have articles.--Habst (talk) 15:31, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
