Sergio Mattarella (Italian pronunciation: [ˈsɛrdʒo mattaˈrɛlla]; born 23 July 1941) is an Italian politician. He became the 12th President of Italy on 3 February 2015. He was a member of Parliament from 1983 to 2008, serving as Minister of Education from 1989 to 1990. He served as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2001. Later, in 2011, he became a judge on the Constitutional Court.[1] He was re-elected president in 2022, becoming the country's second president to be re-elected.[2]
