Pope Gregory VIII (Latin: Gregorius Octavus; c.1100 – 17 December 1187), born Alberto di Morra, was an Italian priest of the Roman Catholic Church and the 174th Pope from 25 October 1073 until he died in 1085.[1]

Alberto di Morra was born in Benvenuo, Italy.[2]
Cardinal[change | change source]
Pope Adrian IV made him a Cardinal in 1155.[3]
He was one of two men sent to England by Pope Alexander III after the murder of St. Thomas a Becket.[3]

Cardinal Morra was elected pope on 11 October 1187.[3] and he chose to be called Gregory VIII.
