Anthony Robert "Tony" Kushner (Nova Iorque, 16 de julho de 1956) é uma dramaturgo e roteirista americano premiado com o Prémio Pulitzer de Teatro pela sua peça Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. Escreveu, com Eric Roth, o filme Munique (2005), realizado por Steven Spielberg, sendo indicado ao Oscar de melhor roteiro adaptado.

Filho de uma família judia, nasceu em Manhattan, Nova Iorque, mas os seus pais, William Kushner e Sylvia (Deutscher) Kushner, ambos formados em música clássica, mudaram-se pouco depois do seu nascimento para Lake Charles, na Louisiana. Kushner regressou a Nova Iorque em 1974 para iniciar os seus estudos universitários na Universidade de Columbia, onde se formou em Literatura Inglesa em 1978. Fez também uma pós-graduação em encenação teatral na Universidade de Nova Iorque, que concluiu em 1984.

Angels in America é uma peça em duas partes: a primeira denominada Millennium Approaches (O Milénio está à porta) e a segunda Peresttroika. Entre as suas outras peças incluem-se Hydrotaphia, Slavs!: Thinking About the Longstanding Problems of Virtue and Happiness, A Bright Room Called Day, Homebody/Kabul, e o guião para o musical Caroline, or Change. A sua recente tradução da Mãe Coragem e Seus Filhos de Bertolt Brecht foi levada ao palco no Teatro Delacorte no Verão de 2006, com Meryl Streep como protagonista e com encenação de George C. Wolfe. Também é o autor da adaptação da peça The Dybbuk de S. Ansky.

Em Janeiro de 2006 foi estreado no Sundance Film Festival um documentário sobre Kushner chamado Wrestling With Angels, com realização de Freida Lee Mock.

Em Abril de 2003 ele e o seu companheiro de longa data, o editor da revista Entertainment Weekly, Mark Harris, casaram em Nova Iorque.

Antissionismo[editar | editar código-fonte]

As críticas de Kushner ao tratamento dado aos palestinos pelo Israel e ao aumento do fundamentalismo religioso na política e na cultura israelense criaram uma certa desconfiança por parte da comunidade judaica norte-americana^[1] e, no início de 2006, deu causa a oposição à entrega de um título de "Doutor Honoris Causa" pela Universidade Brandeis, por parte da Organização Sionista da Norte-americana, que pressionou a universidade para rescindir o convite sem sucesso.^[2]

Em sua defesa, Kushner alegou que suas citações foram "grosseiramente descaracterizadas"^[3] e que não era verdade que apoiaria a Solução de Um Estado. No entanto, posteriormente ele se mostrou favorável a uma fusão entre o Estado de Israel e o Estado da Palestina.^[4]
