"If music was her artistic contribution to the household, Manet apparently neither heard it nor saw it."

Thanks for that. Do you have a biography of Manet or any sources re their relationship? All I could find was this painting and the story behind it, which paints a pretty bleak picture. Or so to speak... Lithoderm 01:56, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a pretty good book on Manet, - I gotta find it and I'll try to work on the article if I can. I have always wondered what set him off to cut up the Degas like that. I guess marriage, wives, and other painters can do that to you...Modernist (talk) 12:32, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Seven days are not enough time to see the states. I really loved what I saw, Boston is a great city, but then I would say that being Irish and all. I was 3 hours in NYC, and although I spent half a year there in 1992, 20 years later it seemed like outer space. The three hours were spend on 53rd and 5th, and in the Met, by the way. Would have loved if you were there, but it turned out to be a last minute plan, it didnt seem right to put you under pressure at the last minute. Anyway, in the few days I got to visit Massachusetts, New Hampshire (Guns, ammo, beer!), Maine, CT, NY for about five minutes. You can guess how it was for the first visit, the focus was on her family, showing that I dont have two heads, nbut there will be a next time, prob in the new year, if the offer still stands. I obviously think very highly about ye guys, to meet ye would be, well. Ceoil (talk) 13:25, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Im very fond of alL of ye, believe me, it will happen, as a warning, prob april/may n est year. Ceoil (talk) 13:43, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Damjing

There is NO surviving evidence that Damjing made the wall painting in Horyu-ji. See the article on him. In addition to it, the original Horyu-ji was burned around 670, and the surviving one today is reconstructed after 670. Today the painting is considered to be done between the end of 7th century to early 8th. Please DO RESEACH before editing.--Kechrite (talk) 06:30, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

interesting talk

I think this is fairly fascinating. Bus stop (talk) 11:17, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Leonard A. Lauder on Collecting Cubism is quite interesting too. Coldcreation (talk) 11:56, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both are really worth watching thanks...Modernist (talk) 12:16, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The Douglas Cooper collection was a fantastic accumulation of the best of Cubist work; Lauder did well by acquiring it; unfortunately Cooper was a monstrous asshole exemplifed by the self-destruction of Nicolas De Stael, and John Richardson walking out on him. Duncan and Casebere are to my mind incredibly boring in a conventional way. Sadly demonstrating the utter mediocrity of contemporary art history essentially clueless - no vision, no insight, just awful conventional crap in most cases. My take on photo realism, pop art, minimalism and conceptual art including Duchamp has become seriously negative as it eludes any sort of visionary expression but parrots market strategies exemplified by Judd and others. High abstraction goes right over these mediocre heads - I'll take Hans Hofmann, Matisse and Picasso and Pollock over all and everything mentioned by the talk at the Walker. Maybe it's time to dump Duchamp...Modernist (talk) 14:07, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Van Gogh

Responded in the talk page. (N0n3up (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]

In regards to your message in the talk page. I understand, but this was not about whether he is Dutch or not, its the fact that the art movement he took part of is interfering on how we address his nationality as you intended, which is unrelated. For example, Picasso was a Spaniard who took part of art movements that originated in France, and like you mentioned, the majority in that certain field were French, yet the art movement that he took part of had nothing to do with his nationality, as you can see his article. And at that time, there were many artists who settled in France, specially Paris that were of different nationalities, thus going back to what I said of the artistic movement and the artist himself. (N0n3up (talk) 05:18, 8 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]
You're mixing apples and oranges. Picasso goes to France and is one of the inventors of Cubism along with Braque and others. Artists from all over the world converge in Paris to paint and to make art. That's not the point, the Post-Impressionist moment that Van Gogh essentially embodied was French, even though he was a Dutchman. Later in can be argued artists from all over began to emulate the innovations set down by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, Cezanne and Lautrec...Modernist (talk) 11:32, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Van Gogh even though his art embodied a French style, he made a mark of the art movement. But that's not the point. The point is that the reason you want to put of Dutch origin instead of was a Dutch painter is because of his artistic field. I saw that you changed it to was a major Post-Impressionist. A Dutch painter whose work.... Even though his artistic sphere has nothing to do with how we refer to his nationality. But since you seem to specialise in this field of art, I will leave my trust in you. (N0n3up (talk) 22:20, 8 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]
Keep in mind that I never added of Dutch origin in the first place, it was an editor in September 2013 who made that change. I am simply trying to clarify in the lede the best way to characterize the amazing, interesting, and mysterious character we all know as Vincent van Gogh...Modernist (talk) 22:31, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and sorry if I seemed to have enlarged the situation more than I was supposed to. (N0n3up (talk) 04:13, 9 January 2015 (UTC))[reply]
It seems to have worked out for the best; not a problem...Modernist (talk) 11:09, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Modernist, i would find it nice, if you could explain, why you reverted my entry of the artist Ivo Ringe on the list of minimalist artists. He works in this field, so i don't know, what i did wrong? Kind regards --Gyanda (talk) 00:40, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Moran question

Hello Modernist, I hope all is well. Given your expertise in art, I hope it won't be a bother if I ask you a question. I wonder if you know any way to find the full provenance of Sunset at Sea by Thomas Moran, and in particular, whether it was publicly displayed anywhere in the US before 1923. We're hoping to put it into an unrelated FAC, but licensing issues are a holdup. If we get it accurately PD licensed, it could then go into other (perhaps more directly related) FAcs as well. Thank you for your time and trouble.   Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 13:58, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lingzhi (talk · contribs) I'm confused, Moran died in 1926, 90 years ago, and his work is PD; additionally so is the 1906 painting. Using it as PD should be okay; for the provenance I would suggest that you contact the Brooklyn Museum; I'm sure they will be happy to provide the relevant information...Modernist (talk) 14:39, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Modernist: There are some (theoretically) possible instances of time this could have been first published (or displayed) where the date of death of the author doesn't clear us for PD. Namely, if this was first published sometime 1923-1977 - or even later -, we would need to find out whether it was done so with or without a copyright notice. See: c:Commons:Hirtle chart. A similar case was resolved by finding the earliest date of public display that clears it for PD (see my Talk). – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 15:05, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Finnusertop (talk · contribs), The Brooklyn Museum hopefully can provide that information regarding when the painting was exhibited. I wonder if it was included in the 1976 exhibition The Natural Paradise: Painting in America, 1800-1950 at MoMA in NYC. [12]...Modernist (talk) 15:17, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the pointer, Modernist. Cheers.   Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 05:56, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Have started the process [13]. He's a monster subject obv, and will take a lot of time and effort in responding and meeting comments. I see stress in my FAC future, but am totally up for it. Ceoil (talk) 22:43, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do the best that I can...Modernist (talk) 22:49, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well you are the in-house expert, so will be needed on matters of fact. The three big areas I see re format are the refs formatting, making sure the licensing is properly tagged for each img on commons, and filling out the content on a few of the "works" sub-sections. There is bound to be a large amount of rephrasing / clarification on the bio. All doable. Am confident that the structure and comprehensiveness criteria are in order. Ceoil (talk) 23:08, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Met Controversies. Nobody is arguing with the substance of the additions, more the weight and (via the source) transparent POV. The editor is certainly acting in good faith, and understandably frustrated by reverts. Its a very complex subject, and we do need a short overview. I think knowledgeable people (I'm not especially, but you are) need to formulate something, brief, first on talk, to transfer to the article. Can you weigh in/ keep an eye. I agree. I was just worried that you would make a lot of edits, and it would make it difficult to go back and fix things if consensus was against the other editor's mass changes to the referencing format. But of course one or a few edits will not do so. Perhaps I came here too quickly...  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 08:21, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging the co-noms: @Ceoil, Kafka Liz, and Ewulp:. Greak work. I've condensed the lead for June 11 ... the only thing that's still bugging me is the repetition of "widely" in the last two sentences, but I'm not sure what to do about that. Unfortunately there aren't many good synonyms for "widely", but maybe something like "A critical and popular success at the Paris Salon of 1833..." could replace the first one. Ewulp (talk) 02:17, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

Oh wow, Emmylou and mark together. Knofler doest get his due, but in terms of slow hand, nobody comes close. I'm on a early 60s kick at the moment, just finished Pete Townsend's bio. Always liked that pre-Beatles mod stuff. Very pop art, maybe before the fact? Ceoil (talk) 14:56, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just heard Harris and Knopfler doing a duet on my car radio yesterday, and happened across your conversation....hello to you both, and back into my cave I go. JNW (talk) 15:04, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
JNW, if you had told me in 1986 that in 2016 I'd be defending Mark Knofler, I'd have hung my head in shame. But age changes perspective, and both he and Fugazi have merits, I'll admit now. Hope the cave is coastal. Ceoil (talk) 15:19, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nice, and I suppose these days Paul McCarthy dearly wishes he was only 64 - which was way back in the day. Nothing wrong with age however. Ceoil (talk) 15:23, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Modernist I've copied over some of the work I've been doing in the sandbox (for weeks now). it's all sourced. If you dislike it, then I don't mind having it deleted, but equally I dislike feeling like a second class citizen who has to have edits approved. I'm well aware I'm not an artist, I probably have no business at all trying to work on this article, but I've given it a shot. It's far from perfect but it's a beginning and having it sit in a sandbox and having me stew because I feel I can't edit doesn't help anything. Sorry, that I haven't come with tune in hand. Simply with text written. Maybe you'll like it. I hope you do. Victoria (tk) 16:52, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Vic you do terrific work - you just gotta believe in yourself....Modernist (talk) 20:16, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I dunno, maybe. I've been gone a long time, haven't written here in months, and writing a style section about van Gogh frankly scares the shit out of me. But I do suffer from angst, no doubt about that. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. I'm finished now and turning over to you and the others for tweaking. Victoria (tk) 20:46, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Victoria, your work here is valued at the highest level, and imo you set an example. In less fraught terms, Fav Lou Reed song? - JNW & Modernist have claimed Pale Blue Eyes, I'm in no doubt they are both wrong - Sister Ray, in all fairness. Ceoil (talk) 22:31, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The image of Warhol in that first link is incredible. Talk about charisma. I'm still in the waiting for the man/sister ray/white light white heat camp, although Lou is a deep well. Also wow, Modernist re Nico. Flabbergasted, but not entirely surprised. Ceoil (talk) 23:07, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The 60s...where did they go; and what now...Modernist (talk) 23:23, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

first name basis

I saw some sources that mentioned that Vincent signed only his first name because he thought his family name would be difficult for French speakers to pronounce [plus... one other reason..? I don't recall]. Is this true, and if so, is it worth mentioning?  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 21:23, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see what I can find...Modernist (talk) 02:15, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
also @Ceoil::The Glory of Van Gogh: An Anthropology of Admiration By Nathalie Heinich (Princeton). see notes to chapter 3 on p. 190, notes 37–40. Note 37 explicitly mentions pronunciation but refers to his name in a catalog not on canvass. The text in chapter 3 that is associated with note 40 seems to suggest some Martin Buber-ish I and Thou kinda thing, but I can't decide whether Vincent said this, since the footnote doesn't specify a letter though the text says V said it to Theo. There is additional bloviation ("By offering himself to posterity" and so on) on this topic on the relevant pages of chapter 3.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 03:02, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is true. And he only signed canvases he thought were "finished", though he did sign some he gave to friends. Lingzhi, is this information you think needs to be in the article? I read about it, but made a decision not to add. If you all want it, then let me know at a place I can find. The information is at my fingertips, so no need to search. I hope to get back to editing by the end of the week, but it's a busy week so no promises. Victoria (tk) 03:14, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

() , Well the last para or so of the article, "Why Everyone Loves Vinnie," mentions that he is an everyman because he signs only his first name. That jibes (roughly) with the "I and Thou" explanation suggested above, but not with the "because the French can't speak Dutch" explanation. Perhaps both explanations are true. I dunno.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 04:12, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Edits on Rousseau

You are currently being listed by Wikibot as a top editor at JJ Rousseau and there is a new article being developed which references his work and his book Emile which I thought might be of interest. The article Sabrina Sidney has not yet been proofed and copy edited by a Rousseau editor and possibly you could see if some of the Rousseau wording and assertions there might be enhanced as time allows. Cheers. Fountains-of-Paris (talk) 16:06, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciated, I'll take a look; I wish I had more time though...Modernist (talk) 17:22, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The heat!

Are you having a heat wave too?? I'm reminded of the last time we worked on VvG, that terribly hot summer. Hasn't been as bad since then. I'm melting. 95% humidity at 7 a.m. Yuck. Victoria (tk) 12:52, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just opened all the windows upstairs; got the cat back inside; here we go again it'll be in the 90s and so damp; I emptied the de-humidifier downstairs in the garage 3 times yesterday...Modernist (talk) 13:11, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm about to do the same and out for errands now before it's unbearable. Every time I check, the dehumidifier is full. Another day in the 90s, very damp. We'll probably have storms blow through in the afternoon. Sometimes that helps, but not much. Victoria (tk) 13:20, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On 13 November 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Robert Scull, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the auction in 1973 of 50 pop art works from the collection of Robert Scull was viewed by the art establishment as the "nouveaux riches cashing in"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert Scull. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Robert Scull), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000.
