ルイス・ワース

ルイス・ワース（Louis Wirth、1897年8月28日 - 1952年5月3日）は、米国のシカゴ学派都市社会学者である。

概要[編集]

ドイツ、フンスリュック郡ゲミュンデンの小村にて生まれる。ゲミュンデンは地元で「小エルサレム」と呼ばれており、ワースの両親もまた宗教活動に熱心であった。ワースは、1911年、ネブラスカ州オマハの叔父の元に移住、米国の教育を受ける。シカゴでロバート・E・パークに学び、後に、シカゴ学派社会学をリードする人物となった。

思想・研究[編集]

ワースの研究関心は、アメリカ都市社会へのユダヤ系移民の適応問題とともに、都市的生活様式、すなわち「アーバニズム」にあった。後者については、論文「生活様式としてのアーバニズム」が都市社会学全体に大きなインパクトを与えるものとなった。ワースは、特定のエスニック集団が半ば強制的に居住させられた地区をゲットーと呼んだ。そして、マイノリティ集団を分析上の概念として初めて用いた社会科学者でもある。

アーバニズム論[編集]

ワースによれば、都市とは大規模、高密度で社会的異質性の高い居住地であり、コミュニティが衰退するために、都市の人びとは、疎外、不安、逸脱にさらされるとした。そして、こうした都市問題を解決するに、都市計画によって、規模、密度、異質性をコントロールすることが必要であると主張した。
