北川三夫（ジョゼフ M. キタガワ、Joseph M. Kitagawa、1915年3月8日 - 1992年10月7日）は、日本出身のアメリカの宗教学者。シカゴ大学神学部名誉教授。宗教史研究の先駆者。[1][2]
経歴[編集]
1915年大阪府生まれ。旧制奈良県立畝傍中学校卒業。1937年立教大学卒業。1941年渡米。1942年から1945年ニューメキシコ州とアイダホ州の日系人収容所で過ごす。1947年イリノイ州エバンストンにあるシーベリ・ウェスタン神学校（Seabury-Western Theological Seminary）卒業（B.D.）。1951年シカゴ大学神学研究科博士課程修了（Ph.D.）。ヨアヒム・ワッハに学び、博士論文のテーマは空海と真言宗。
1951年シカゴ大学神学部の教員となる。1955年米国籍を取得。1960年『History of Religions』初代編集委員長。1970年から1980年シカゴ大学神学部学部長。同僚にミルチャ・エリアーデらがいた。1969年から1972年米国宗教史学会会長。1975年から1985年国際宗教史学会副会長。1977年立教大学より名誉博士号を授与される。1987年シカゴ大学退職、名誉教授。カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校、東京大学、高野山大学客員教授なども務めた。妻はシカゴ大学社会学科教授であったエベリン・キタガワ（Evelyn M. Kitagawa）。著書、論文多数。
1957年鈴木大拙を招いてイリノイ州ラ・サールで開催されたポール・ケーラス記念シンポジウムでは、北川は運営委員長として重要な役割を果たした。大拙とは長年親交があり、北川は大拙の西洋人のための仏教哲学と英語の表現力を高く評価していた。大拙の英文による主要著書の書評を北川は米国の宗教学術誌に執筆した。
