تبتّل^[۱] زمانی است که شخص به‌طور داوطلبانه مجرد بماند یا پرهیز جنسی داشته باشد یا هر دو که این امر معمولاً به دلایل مذهبی انجام می‌گیرد.^[۲]^[۳]^[۴]^[۵] تبتل اغلب در ارتباط با نقش یک مقام رسمی مذهبی یا باورمند است.^[۲]
