Administrators' newsletter – January 2020[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Werner Heisenberg[edit]

Hi there, please remove the pending changes protection of Werner Heisenberg. I belive it's no longer applicable. comrade waddie96 (talk) 18:05, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant protection at 1[edit]

The page is both indefinite pending-changes protected and indefinite semi-protected. The first of these is therefore apparently redundant. I see you were the last one involved in protecting the page. Mind fixing this needless redundancy? Thanks, RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 03:12, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The verb "fixing" does not apply to things that cause no issues. Furthermore, there is an unresolved bug that makes keeping PC active the currently correct practice. Samsara 11:35, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please add page protection level for CBS Sports & NBC Sports[edit]

Hello, Samsara (talk), I was wondering if there would be a way you or any other admin could please add a protection level to the CBS Sports & NBC Sports articles here on Wikipedia? There's plenty of vandals out there who keep making disruptive edits by adding text claiming that both CBS & NBC broadcast NBA games on CBS & NBC. Neither claim is factually correct. I'd greatly appreciate it if you or another admin could please add a protection level to both articles preventing these sockpuppet accounts from futher vandalizing these articles. Please help? Reduce protection level of Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards pages[edit]

You've indefinitely semi-protected a bunch of Nickelodeon's kid's choice award pages due to long term abuse. Would it be possible for you to reduce the protection levels on those pages to pending changes? They've been very infrequently edited since protection. Full list of affected pages:

Chess (talk) (please use {{ping|Chess}} on reply) 02:36, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand this request - "been very infrequently edited since protection" is the intended effect. There is no expectation that articles of historic award ceremonies will continue to receive legit edits at a high rate. Samsara 00:56, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Halloween and LGBT People[edit]

Hello Samsara--I am doing some research on Halloween and discovering that there is a long historical relationship between LGBTQ+ people and Halloween, and that Halloween--similar to Carnival--has been a very queer holiday. I would like to add some of that information to the Halloween article but need access to do so. Please let me know if I would be allowed access. Thanks! RachelWex (talk) 22:43, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RachelWex: your account was upgraded to extended confirmed user in 2016. That's like level 2. Editing the article should only require level 1 ("autoconfirmed") per the configuration made to it, so you should be able to edit. If you are experiencing problems, they are not to do with the protection settings of the article. Perhaps you were trying to edit during a database lock? Try again and if you encounter error messages, maybe take them to WP:VP/T, where you'll get a quicker response than I can usually give right now. Samsara 00:33, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:14, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Immune system protection[edit]

I saw your note after I protected that article (and made a hash of it in doing it). I did it for 12 hours, after reviewing some of the vandalism and figuring 12 hours would take it past it being TFA. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:33, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

According to server time, it's now yesterday's FA, so I think your decision is fine. Just because we haven't, as far as I can recall, interacted before, I want to make sure you're aware of the convention of generally not protecting the TFA to allow newbies to get a first taste of editing Wikipedia. The idea is to especially not protect it while it's the main article, so in that light, as I said, what you did seems fine. Cheers, Samsara 01:41, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Spence[edit]

The section you added on the no-confidence vote is already in the article (under "Fundraising and expansion of the university"): When international student numbers did not reach an expected increase in 2012, the university was forced to make staff redundant, in response to which 80 of the university's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences teaching staff voted on a motion of no confidence in Spence.. This is why it is so hard to explain this at RPP - the IP users are in part removing material that is already there. Deus et lex (talk) 13:07, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to change to "more than 80" and add "overwhelmingly endorsed" though. Deus et lex (talk) 13:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have combined into the one section. By the way, the accusation of sockpuppetry was totally unfair and unreasonable. Deus et lex (talk) 13:19, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I made no such accusation. I laid out facts that could have been explained in other ways. Samsara 13:21, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand why I make a complaint to help improve an article and instead end up being the one that is complained about. How is that helpful? Deus et lex (talk) 13:29, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for improving the article, and apologies for being cranky with you yesterday. Even if you choose to take no further action on the RPP, I'd be grateful if you could keep an eye on the article at least, the IPs have been reverting far more than what you have added in. Deus et lex (talk) 00:02, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User acting childish and raging for no reason[edit]

A user by the name of TVFan88 has been acting very childish such as raging in all caps, whining over little things, etc, he also has been attacking me by constantly edit warring against me in a childish manner, he seems to also have anger issues. I think you should block him until further notice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pong3SouthFrieza34 (talkcontribs) 03:03, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Which articles is this affecting? Samsara 03:33, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be affecting the Horrid Henry (TV series) page, but I do believe Pong3SouthFrieza34 is telling the truth as unlike TVFan88, he doesn't seem to be raging and he also is providing a source, while TVFan88 is going crazy at him for no reason at all and is calling it fake with no evidence either.

This drama is over, The reasons i put up a UNO reverse card, You have been Edit warring along with other users Edit warring, restoring hoax on that page! some users are sockpuppets, And they restore hoaxes for no reason, The source is fake, It's inspect Element, And also this is very Cringy nowadays, And it's fake news, You are acting like Fox News! That's why i put up the UNO Reverse Card here so you can stay away from this page and restoring hoax, You and your little lies, It wasn't me That i did, It was you, I can't stand with this cringe, It has to stop.

THANK YOU!

No TVFan, you need stop this, you are acting childish by going back and forth with him, especially you TVFan, as you have been making rather ridiculous comparsions, like are you really comparing a whole entire News station to one single user? Also enough with the childish and amateur comments such as "Cringey" or "UNO Reverse card" as it makes you look even more childish than you already are. Not to mention, DO YOU EVEN HAVE PROOF IT'S INSPECT ELEMENT? No? then OK, it will stay until the time being.

You placed the Toyota Camry article under the Pending Changes protection on October 13, 2017 (apparently with no specified expiration date). It seems that the article has remained under the PC protection since then. Could you please unprotect the article now? Per the WP:PCPP policy, "Indefinite PC protection should be used only in cases of severe long-term disruption," and that's not really the case here. Looking at the article's history for February-March, I don't see a few edits that were not accepted but they did not appear to have been actual vandalism. I don't think the article qualifies for PC protection now, as there is no active vandalism or BLP or copyright violations there. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 12:17, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Unprotection request[edit]

1 was put under pending changes 2 years ago for frequent vandalism, but there has been little since. I propose that this page be unprotected since it can be handled by regular counter-vandalism patrollers. Thanks in advance! It is under semi, not PC1. The PC1 has remained enabled because of this bug. Samsara 02:03, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi @Samsara:, Can I ask question to you ? When i read any wikipedia article at the end of article I found categories box .How to remove this?(Fade258 (talk) 12:45, 17 June 2021 (UTC))[reply]

I suspect the most comprehensive solution would be a userscript through GreaseMonkey, as that will work even when you're not logged in, as long as you're using the same browser where you installed the script. Mediawiki also very similarly provides a userscripts mechanism, but these will only be active when you are logged in. I'm not aware of any script that does exactly what you're asking, but it is definitely possible to create one with GreaseMonkey. HTH, Samsara 18:24, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.

Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

Notice

The article Miswart has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

dictionary definition WP:NOTDIC

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. rsjaffetalk 23:40, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Samsara, I just want you to protect The Magic School Bus TV series pages from vandals.[edit]

Hello. Samsara are you an administrator around Wikipedia. I need your help, because I notice that the 1994-1997 TV series the Magic School Bus has been vandalised and reverted over and over again.

The vandal was from an anonymous user 2603:8080:600:4486:49F4:3D85:9765:95EA who removed all of the Canada things on the article. he even claims that it's not a Canadian series. Please protect this page please, before it becomes worse.
