Thorium intro[edit]

Somebody complaint about the lead of the thorium article, which was a nuclear energy advertising part. I cut out most and created a little more from the article for the lead. Can you have a look as you contributed a lot to plutonium and uranium. Thanks! --Stone (talk) 08:17, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. I plan to bring that article to feature level. Californium is first though. --mav
Thanks! The thorium has a strong advertising group for the thorium fuel cycle, but a person capable to bring uranium and plutonium, which have even more NPOV problems to FA it will work even better with thorium.--20:07, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar[edit]

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
I, -- Cirt (talk), award the The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar to Mav, for your kind, polite, and matter-of-fact responses to FA concerns addressed during WP:FAR processes - fostering a positive and collaborative atmosphere that all Wikipedia users can hopefully learn from. Thank you very much for this professional and polite demeanor. It is very much appreciated, and makes for a warm and congenial editing environment in interactions with you. -- Cirt (talk) 03:01, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your excellent conduct at FAR proceedings. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 03:01, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
NP - I learned years ago that being combative, defensive or passive aggressive on wiki is counter-productive — both to my own work and to the greater project. --mav
Agreed. Thanks again, -- Cirt (talk) 01:55, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Finding Dreams with a question.[edit]

I looked at how long you have been with Wikipedia. I must say that is mind blowing. I'm very impressed for what that is worth. WP Elements Triple Crown[edit]

Mount Fee[edit]

Mav, this is totally out of the blue, so please ignore if you're not interested. I'm reviewing the FAC for Mount Fee, and I'm finding it a bit hard going, but I'm not sure if this is because I know so little about geology, or if the article is really not very smoothly written. It's the third nom, so I hate to oppose unnecessarily. I know you've taken geology articles to FA, so I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look, and either review it yourself, or just give me a bit of feedback about your impressions to help me assess it. Thanks -- and as I say, if you don't have time, no problems. Mike Christie (talklibrary) 17:28, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just went to the FAC page but it has been archived. But words like "trending" & "edifice" are standard in geography and geology. --mav
OK, good to know for next time. Thanks. Mike Christie (talklibrary) 23:48, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Californium FAC[edit]

I noticed the Californium FAC got archived with no consensus. Just wanted to let you know that I'm aware you were part-way through addressing the points raised in my review (at least that is what I think had happened), and that I had deferred a decision on whether to support the nomination until after that had been done. I am uncertain, though, on how to strike some of my objections if they are later addressed. If you want to transfer them to the article talk page (or would like me to do so), I'd be happy to respond there to any points you have about the other matters I raised. WP Elements in the Signpost[edit]

"WikiProject Report" would like to focus on WikiProject Elements for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Other editors will also have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 17:13, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in the interview. The overwhelming response shows the excitement and dedication of the members at WikiProject Elements. I had to trim some of the interview to make it a little more manageable and to reduce redundancy. The responses to the first question and the "anything else" question were used in writing introductions for each member. I also cut an unneeded question. Please take a look at the revised interview to make sure I haven't inadvertently changed the tone or character of your response. Also check to make sure I've used the correct pronouns when referring to you. None of these changes are set in stone and we still have plenty of time until publication in which we can tweak things. Pictures and a sidebar will be added closer to the publication date. Cheers! -Mabeenot (talk) 01:52, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Failed? That's too bad. I'll start a FAC for Cf. --mav (reviews needed) 23:16, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

meaowrrr![edit]

Hey, I meant it when I said Californium was nice. Was not trying to kiss up...or to soften a blow.

Of all my comments, the only one that I really feel hard core about wrt affecting a vote, would be getting the data in the infobox referenced (we just need to start doing that...other articles do, for instance biographies, species, etc.) That's core Wiki principle (and useful to the reader AS WELL as probably driving us to spot some errors--on F, this was the case).

All the rest of it is really stylistic input. Obviously, I sincerely meant all I said, as ways to recommend improving the article. Hopefully some was helpful insights. But use your judgment on what will make the article best for the reader.

Again, outstanding article...I really got a sense of the element's personality from reading the Wiki article. In a way, a bit similar to how Seaborg does in his book. Kudos. TCO (talk) 00:57, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Understood and thanks. :) My concern about refs in the table is the placement of the cites; having them right next to numeric data makes reading the table a bit harder than without them. I'll start to think about a way to make everybody happy. --mav
I feel ya. It is ugly to have number next to number. A ref column after might work nice, like with State reptile, because it will also drive a mindset of having to have the ref. Alternately, you can do rows underneath. Or even a final single row underneath at the very end with a "note" for referencing. Then, when you click on the note it gives you all the details of what citation refs what property. Sorta like the CRC has a discussion and list of refs after a table. No biggie. However you want to do it.TCO (talk) 02:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion would be appreciated[edit]

reviews needed[edit]

1. This is sorta match-making (don't get the wrong idea though!), but I think it would be great if you could give a review for Manhattan Project, and the writer of that, gave a review for you. The topics have some relation to each other, so each of you might find it interesting.

2. How do I create a signature that has the "reviews needed" like yours does? Will you do it for me? Right now, I have a section on my page for reviews needed, but not sure if it is really pushing any traffic. I do sometimes start little kerfuffles on Wikipedia space talk pages...so if I could drive some traffic to needed content, it might make a little more value out of the chit chat strategizing.

fluorine protect[edit]

Hey, I don't want to over-react, but we had an IP (just one, just now) try to edit the article to debate fluorine for teeth (I hate it when the controversies stick their noses into our articles...glad there is no Middle East dynamic or British Isles naming issues). I think it's fine, now, would not bother protecting unless we get issues. Also, I may float the article past a couple of academics or industry experts. In which case, they may have some IP edits that are additive. So...kind of a wishy washy post, but might need admin protect in the future.TCO (talk) 18:50, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

fixing {{USGS}} and {{NPS}}[edit]

Hi, Mav! I saw your edits where you struggled with the limitations of {{USGS}} and {{NPS}}. It turns out that I have a fix --- check out the use of the source parameter at Template:USGS/testcases. I had forgotten to put an editrequest at that template --- if you copy Template:USGS/sandbox to Template:USGS, we can go live. I can also perform the analogous edit over at {{NPS}}. What do you think? —hike395 (talk) 17:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So long as those templates can use archiveurl, then I'm OK with using them. Better still would be to have a note parameter on the standard cite templates; quotes really aren't a good place to have a PD notice. --mav
You can use archiveurl like so: {{USGS|source={{cite web|url=http://www.usgs.gov/foo.html|title=Old thing|archiveurl=http://webcitation.org/fetindeeyi|archivedate=2012-02-26}} }}. Hope this helps. —hike395 (talk) 10:32, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV re eruption end date of Lassen Peak[edit]

I've been trying to teach User:Noble fan about WP:NPOV and WP:RS at User talk:Noble fan#Mount Lassen eruption end date. I found that the sources do contradict one another, some say 1917 and other say 1921. To maintain NPOV, I removed mentions of the "1914 to 1921" period, and used "starting at 1914", instead. Also cited to Volcanoworld to maintain balance. —hike395 (talk) 14:42, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, as you seem to know a lot about elements of the periodic table, could you please clarify something for me. The first sentence of the article Roentgenium reads:

Roentgenium is a synthetic radioactive chemical element with the symbol Rg and atomic number 111.

I don't know much about it, though I was pretty certain that a previous name for it was unununium. Should the first sentence be the below?

Roentgenium, formerly called unununium, is a synthetic radioactive chemical element with the symbol Rg and atomic number 111.

Unununium was just a placeholder name so it doesn't really matter either way. --mav

Privacy protection[edit]

Dear Mav,

Some time ago I entered Wikipedia using my own name, which was a mistake. Now, due to the continuing smear campaign by the user Materialscientist, I want to completely withdraw from Wikipedia both my account an any mentions of my former relations to it. Now I know the identity of the user Materialscientist, and have proofs that he does not act as an impartial editor, but instead is involved in a conflict of interest with my group. Moreover, he uses every opportunity to attack my real name (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Boron#User_should_not_be_deleting_the_useful_references_from_Wikipedia). Personal attacks are unacceptable. In the above link, he explicitly lies about the content of my recent article, which other users found useful and wanted to cite, and turns it against me. You can read that article, and see for yourself where the truth is. I would like to ask you to take actions to protect my privacy, by unlinking my Wikipedia name ("luebuwei") from my real name ("aoganov") and forbidding user Materialscientist to discuss me on Wikipedia. Also, if all mentions of my name on the above talk-page could be removed, I would appreciate that a lot. Thank you for your understanding!

P.S. I don't want to discuss the identity of Materialscientist on public pages, but will be able to discuss it and the facts I have by email. P.P.S. Concerning my account on Wikipedia, I don't have time to contribute to WP and did not write anything for a long time. I doubt that I will have more time for it in the future, and I certainly cannot spend time to read the rules and procedures of Wikipedia, which seem to be essential for avoiding trouble. As you can understand, experiences such as this one, are also discouraging. It would appreciate if you could delete my account. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luebuwei (talkcontribs) 00:08, 9 April 2012 (UTC) P.P.P.S. After I left this note, I saw on your page a link to another attack on me from Materialscientist - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Materialscientist#IP_edit_warring_at_Boron_and_Allotropes_of_boron.~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luebuwei (talkcontribs) 00:13, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Stories Project[edit]

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

Rob Lanphier suggested that I speak with you. You have been editing for quite a while!

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project.

Thank you for your time,

In looking at the subject .jpg on the page, I noticed that Mount Tenabo was identified as the tall mountain visible from Battle Mountain in the picture. I believe that the peak in the photo is Mt Lewis in the Shoshone Range, south east of Battle Mountain rather than Mt Tenabo and the Cortez Mountains further south and east.

Regards,

You are correct. I moved the image and removed it from the article. Thank you. --mav

WP Geology in the Signpost[edit]

Mav, I notice that you have contributed to quite a few of the featured articles in WikiProject Geology. It might be interesting to have your viewpoint in the Signpost interview below. RockMagnetist (talk) 05:48, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Geology for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. Mav...it was very kind of you to mention my work on Yellowstone National Park there...I concur with your sentiments on FA level articles...though I agree that FA level work should be exceptional, it has become much more laborous than it used ot be. The grand Teton National Park effort on my part has been ongoing off and on for over a year now and I created over 100 supporting stubs on the mountains, lakes and trails there...not counting your geology article on the park and historical strutures done by editors like User:Acroterion...I still have about 20 stubs more to do before the park features and locations will be (almost) completely covered! I think in about 2 weeks I'll be forwarding the Grand Teton NP article to FAC....that's when the real fun begins!--MONGO 04:05, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I have nominated the One Direction main article for GA, although no one has started reviewing, I was wondering if you think the article is ready and could you some pointers for improvement. The article currently has more views then every article i checked which includes Justin Bieber,United States, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, The Beatles for example, so I guess its kind of important. Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)[edit]

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:24, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Bollywood/Actors/Male/Amitabh Bachchan, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. The article Scribes (software) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable software, tagged with {{notability}} since december 2007. The single review listed does not establish notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Orphaned non-free media (File:Porky Pig1.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Porky Pig1.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Mono Lake[edit]

Hi, I think I asked you a question or two about pictures of Mono Lake you took in 2009. Now I'd like to point you to de:Mono Lake, the German language article I improved over quite some time. It became "exzellent" (~featured) recently and some of your pictures might have helped. Even if you don't speak any German, you might want to take a look. Maybe you can get an idea you can use here too. And I'd like to point you to de:Mount St. Helens, another German language article mostly written by me and awarded as "lesenswert" (~good). You might check the chapter on "Regeneration von Flora und Fauna" (I guess you get that even if you don't speak the language) as this topic is sadly missing in the articles here, despite being the most fascinating aspect of the mountain in my view. Again thanks for your pictures of Mono Lake. rgds --h-stt !? 14:43, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hill 700 at Bougainville Island[edit]

I removed an edit you made nearly ten years ago in the March section of the 1943 article and the copy someone made to the March, 1943 article. The attack could not have happened on that date, since the campaign did not begin until November, 1943. Unfortunately, I don't know the correct date, so I was unable to move the edit to its proper place. If the subject still interests you, you may wish to do so. The full text was, "American forces were attacked by Japanese troops on Hill 700 at Bougainville Island, in a battle that lasted 5 days." Robert A.West (Talk) 13:08, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader: The media files you uploaded as:
