Invitation to discussion[edit]
Hi Atlasowa! I saw you worked on "List of most popular websites", so I'd like to ask you to join the discussion about implementation of the bot which would display direct visits number to each particular site in the web-sites info box next to alexa ranking index. Would you please advance your idea on my suggestion here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Infobox_website. (Implementation of web measurement bot in website infobox) Thank you Noamsp (talk) 15:02, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

Hand-coding[edit]
Hey all :).
I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).
You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyeswikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).
If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:33, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Notification of discussion[edit]
A few months ago, you participated in a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Did you know about Gibraltar-related DYKs on the Main Page. I am proposing that the temporary restrictions on such DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012, should be lifted and have set out a case for doing so at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs. If you have a view on this, please comment at that page. Prioryman (talk) 21:47, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Image nomination at Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2013 March 1[edit]
Hi. I reviewed your nomination at Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2013 March 1 of File:Great Mosque Of Kano.jpg. From comparing the images, I believe that the image at allaboutnigeria is an upscale of our image, as opposed to our image being a scaled down version of that one. However, you said that the image was published at allaboutnigeria in 2008, which, of course, would mean there is no way that they copied our image. Can you tell me how you ascertained 2008 as the date for their image? I couldn't find anything on the site or google indicating that. Thanks. --B (talk) 03:25, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Article Feedback deployment[edit]
Hey Atlasowa; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 22:18, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Nomination of Institute for Cultural Diplomacy for deletion[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Institute for Cultural Diplomacy until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

Lifting the Gibraltar DYK restrictions[edit]
A couple of months ago, you opposed a proposal to lift the restrictions on Gibraltar-related DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012. Could you possibly clarify (1) under what conditions you would support a lifting of the restrictions, and (2) when you think it would be appropriate to lift the restrictions? Hello, I'm Faizan Al-Badri. I wanted to let you know that I undid one of your recent contributions, such as the one you made with this edit to Egyptian universities, because it didn’t appear constructive to me. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks, Faizan Al-Badri -Let's talk! 13:07, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
neues Benachrichtigungsdesign[edit]
--Geitost 12:59, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
Flickr images[edit]
Hi, thanks for sharing link to Flickr CC dataset. I may add these photos in near future. The only concern with Flickr images that lots of them are family photos with coordinates taken using approximate location by city or suburb. Panoramio or Wikimedia Commons generally provides better quality resources.
--Maxim75 (talk) 21:29, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, you're right, Maxim75. But, 2 points:
- Flickr apparently chose only 100 million of their 288 million CC flickr images for this dataset, and the dataset is supposed to help research on geolocation; so maybe they discarded the family photos (at least partially, automatically).
- I recently had a look at how panoramio works (that is: google) and i found a 2009 paper about image recognition (Tour the World: building a web-scale landmark recognition engine Yan-Tao Zheng1, Ming Zhao2, Yang Song2, Hartwig Adam2Ulrich Buddemeier2, Alessandro Bissacco2, Fernando Brucher2, Tat-Seng Chua1, and Hartmut Neven). Have a look at "Panoramio Acceptance policy for Panoramio photos" and "Acceptance policy for Google Earth and Google Maps" and compare to their image recognition paper:
- "we also adopt a multi-view face detector [15] to filter out photos with overly large area of face. This is to ensure the purity of landmark models, by pruning photos dominated by people in front of landmarks."
- "map images (...) To prune these outliers, we exploit a photographic v.s. non-photographic image classifier. The classifier is trained based on Adaboost algorithm over low level visual features of color histogram and hough transform."
- Panoramio excludes "Photos with advertising superimposed on the image or in the title", "inscriptions, or signs", "Logos, mini-images, images that are not real photos, scanned documents, text documents", "Text such as large copyright notices, advertising, or large URLs"... (Optical character recognition?)
- Panoramio also excludes nudity. Compare nudejs.
- I guess Flickr/Yahoo will have similar techniques. This will all be interesting for commons too, see i.e. commons:User:Multichill/Using OpenCV to categorize files... Best --Atlasowa (talk) 08:46, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool update[edit]
Hey Atlasowa. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.
We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.
Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 22:06, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Atlasowa. Thanks for your interest. If you do wish to respect my preference, then the answer is no, I'd rather you not place the essay anywhere or draw attention to it. Please be aware that the writing has been widely shared already (it received much more attention than I could have imagined). Ceoil's edit summary about "fighting old wars" is relevant. Regards, Riggr Mortis (talk) 23:19, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
- OK, I understand. Is the dead link (to archive) at user:Riggr Mortis on purpose? Anyway, thank you for the quick response and for your essay. --Atlasowa (talk) 12:46, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I should remove the link, but then I thought someone would be even more confused if they were following an old link to my user page. That is the problem with using my user page for that project!
- Thanks for respecting my wishes on this. I would rather see other people writing their own thoughts on the subjects I mentioned. Riggr Mortis (talk) 07:48, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 26[edit]
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Technological Educational Institute of Athens, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Greek (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello from a fellow viz enthusiast[edit]
Will you be there at the Zurich Hackathon?
Replaying Edits & Visualising Edit History is my submission for Wikimania 2014, would love your comments & ideas.
I was going through the list at Edit History Visualization and found Schnark's artikel-statistik very interesting. Are you interested only in wiki specific viz or viz in general ?--jeph (talk) 08:23, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello Atlasowa. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of GJ Reynolds, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not unambiguously promotional. Thank you. Callanecc (talk • contribs • logs) 09:26, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
