  • After over a decade of silence, the WikiProject Aviation newsletter is making a comeback under the name The WikiEagle. This first issue was sent to all active members of the project and its sub-projects. If you wish to continue receiving The WikiEagle, you can add your username to the mailing list. For now the newsletter only covers general project news and is run by only one editor. If you wish to help or to become a columnist, please let us know. If you have an idea which you believe would improve the newsletter, please share it; suggestions are welcome and encouraged.
  • On 16 December, an RfC was closed which determined theaerodrome.com to be an unreliable source. The website, which is cited over 1,500 articles, mainly on WWI aviation, as of the publishing of this issue.
  • Luft46.com has been added to the list of problematic sources after this discussion.
  • The Jim Lovell article was promoted to Featured Article status on 26 December after being nominated by Hawkeye7.
  • The Raymond Hesselyn article was promoted to Good Article status on 4 December after being nominated by Zawed.
  • The Supermarine Sea King article was promoted to Good Article status on 22 December after being nominated by Amitchell125.
  • The William Hodgson (RAF officer) article was promoted to Good Article status on 26 December after being nominated by Zawed.

Re my comment of 2020-Aug-24 at " talk: Wayne Roberson, Austin, Texas", you asked about errors I mentioned but did not correct…these were minor, but nobody likes loose ends. Before I elaborate to you or proceed to fix those errors, I’ve tried to learn more about entering. But finding where to go within Wikipedia to learn how to do many things eludes me.

Much of my prior editing has been desultory: rephrasing for clarity, etc. Often I simply look into an "edit" screen to see how things are done.

Your experience as an editor is far beyond my knowledge, and you replied to me, so I am asking for help. I have an example problem that pertains to many things I would like to enter:

I cannot learn how to add to or revise the "References" section of an article. An example is "Fort Lancaster": all I see is on the "edit" screen is "==References==" then "{{Reflist}}". [I corrected this to show the template instead of substituting it, using {{Tlx|Reflist}} instead of just {{Reflist}}. – AlanM1]

I’ve entered several times to this article (in 1974-1976, I was head of field archeology at that site). I want to comment on a recent statement about a "model" of the site in a local (Ozona TX) museum, which museum’s Wikipedia article has a photo of a cute but fanciful little construction with no data to support it. There is no illustration in Federal or State of Texas data showing what was above ground, only archeological ephemera such as foundation stones and soil differences are evident. The supposed "ruins" of a building in the article itself is the work of late 1960’s architects who had little more than a few scattered stones to guide them, and the "restoration" is imaginative and embarrassing, to say the least, but I would not eliminate the photo or criticize the "restoration" — which precedes my time at Texas Parks and Wildlife.

@Wayne Roberson, Austin, Texas: Hi. I'm afraid I've no idea what it was about to begin with, being such a long time ago. I'm pretty inactive on Wikipedia for some time now, so I can't be of much help, except to say that, if you're looking for a primer on references, I believe WP:REFBEGIN is a decent starting point and will point you to additional resources if needed.
The key is that the reference code is placed between <ref>...</ref> tags at the point in the text where you want the [#] to appear. The wiki software then assembles them all at the point where the {{Reflist}} template is found (usually in the References section), doing additional formatting and setting up the links back and forth to the [#] in the article text.
Two good places to ask for help are WP:Teahouse and WP:Help desk. I hope this helps. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 21:29, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Features for new users coming soon (and mentors wanted)[edit]

Hello.

Although you've not been very active at all there recently, I see you're still currently listed as a host at the Teahouse. So I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Unfortunately, after some time away from the help platforms and editing in general (due to interference from Real LifeTM), I don't feel particularly qualified to help any more, as it seems I need to go look up some of the simplest things, and don't really have a feel for what's going on in the project like I used to. Drake's recent certifications[edit]

Hey, have you noticed differences on RIAA's website? When we check the database of each song, RIAA has updated the singles equal to 27M. But on their list of highest digitally certified artists, they have only added 20M. TheWikiholic (talk) 01:54, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TheWikiholic: When I've run those down in the past, I usually find it's related to some idiosyncracy in the way they add up the individual awards. I.e., either there are awards in the detailed search that are not included in the total for some reason, or there are awards missing from the detailed search, usually because of a slight difference in the artist name, collaboration, etc.. I'd expect the totals and detailed search have to come from the same underlying data – I don't think they are manually tallied – so there is usually an explanation, and I just let it work itself out in time. I've occasionally emailed them about a problem. Though I've never gotten a direct response, they fix it eventually. :) —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 16:20, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. As you no doubt know, there are lots of different ways to look at music certifications. List of highest-certified music artists in the United States is specifically about just two of the RIAA lists, as published on their website, and cited in the article. The criteria for inclusion are simple, based on the top 100 "Artists (albums)" and top 50 "Artists (digital singles)" ranks in the two lists. Also note that the artists you cited have certs below the top 100 rank (currently 23 MM certs). Bob Marley & The Wailers, for example, have 21.5 MM album certs and Jimi Hendrix has 23 MM, while Oasis, Robbie Williams, and Jamiroquai have less than the 10 MM certs that is apparently the criterion to appear on the RIAA list. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 03:22, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar?[edit]

In March 2022, you edited Boron Air Force Station, including "grammar" changes. One was to change "inactivate" to "deactivate" in connection with the operating squadron. @Lineagegeek: Re: this, both terms seem used according to "de" vs. "in", which even shows a 7:5 preference, though that's not at all scientific. Google's Oxford Languages dictionary entries even specifically mention the specific military use of the term at "deactivate", but not "inactivate". Still, I probably wasn't referring to that change when I put "grammar" in the comment, and I'm a little surprised I made the change anyway; must have been on auto-pilot. I can understand it being either way if inactivate is the preferred military term, though we are supposed to eschew jargon (and words like eschew, for that matter) in favor of more general terminology and usage. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 18:32, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
