Using the visual editor[edit]

Hi. I joined the community of Wikipedia writers/editors earlier this week. I have a question I hope this Board can help me with. When I first registered, I was given an option of two ways to view editable pages; they were something like 'real view' and a second I don't remember (this one looks like a mark-up language). I chose the second, but think I should have chosen the first option. Can anyone advise me on how to change to the 'real view'? Thank you.

Hi, AW; from what you say, you would prefer to use the visual editor, which is more intuitive. To turn it on, you need to go into your account, so:
1. click on your name where it appears at the very top-center of any Wikipedia window.
2. On the next screen, click the word preferences; it is to the right of the word sandbox at the top of the window.
3. On this screen, in the long rectangular grey area, click on the word editing
4. Some options will appear. The option at the bottom of the screen is Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta. Click its box to unselect it, click the blue Save button at the bottom of your screen, and you will now be able to visually edit.
I don't visually edit, but this page explains nearly everything you need to know. And here is the user guide.
Happy editing!--Quisqualis (talk) 07:42, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

September 2018[edit]

A page you created has been nominated for deletion as an attack page, according to section G10 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

Do not create pages that attack, threaten, or disparage their subject or any other entity. Attack pages and files are not tolerated by Wikipedia, and users who create or add such material may be blocked from editing. Barbara   14:07, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking the liberty of editing this user's talk page as I did not in any way deem the page created by this editor to be an attack page, and I removed the warning template shortly after it was placed. (See here for explanation) Nick Moyes (talk) 10:26, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, AWCzarnik. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. —PaleoNeonate – 21:55, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I believe the article in my Sandbox is ready to go live. Would appreciate direction on how to do that. -AWCzarnik (talk) 03:29, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You may use the Article wizard to submit your draft to WP:AFC. Regards,  Spintendo  03:45, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Exceptionally helpful. Thank you. The automation of submission using this wizard is a tremendous aid.- AWCzarnik (talk) 05:48, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Teahouse reply: re Czarnik v. Illumina, Inc[edit]

Hello. I thought I'd drop by and see how your draft article in your sandbox was doing, following this reply of mine at the Teahouse back in September. If or when you think it's ready to be accepted into the encyclopaedia, you can submit it for review at Articles for Creation by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page. However, I still advise you first to add a note on your talk page about your involvement with the article, in line with this guideline on managing conflict of interests. Did you ever get any help or feedback from the Law Wikiproject? Let me know if you need any further assistance. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:51, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Nick. Thank you for writing. I have worked on the article in my Sandbox and I think it now has an encyclopedic format. But truth be told, I'm so intimidated that I could do something wrong according to the rules of Wikipedia that I don't want to try to take the article live. I will never be able to learn all that needs to be learned to be confident, and so I'm just going to leave the job of Editor to others. AWCzarnik (talk) 03:44, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, really?[edit]

So you actually managed to create an article on a topic you were so heavily involved in? It's probably not unheard of, but it is certainly impressive. Congratulations! If you want to challenge yourself further, consider nominating your article for Wikipedia:Did you know. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:51, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I knew about the case- and its importance- because I was involved in it. Its significance far outweighs the fact that I was the Plaintiff. Being left off a patent is a big deal for a scientist and prior to this decision there was no precedent for any legal remedy. It seems crazy, but literally the party that submits the patent application gets to decide who the "inventors" are; if you're an inventor and have been left off the list, there was nothing you could do about it. I wrote this WP article as best I could to have a detached, third-person point-of-view. I also declared my potential conflict. The editors were great. There were a lot of improvements that needed to be made before this article was accepted.- AWCzarnik (talk) 11:21, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedian[edit]

Hello Dr. Czarnik, have come across you from your case against Illumina, Inc. and found that you are active on Wikipedia. Noted your Wikipedia account on your dedicated article, hope you do not mind. - Indefensible (talk) 04:59, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't mind at all. Thanks. It's a badge I wear proudly. - AWCzarnik (talk) 00:39, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see that. Is there anything you think is missing or needs to be corrected on related articles? If so and if there are independent sources, would be glad to help make the updates. - Indefensible (talk) 23:03, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the offer. I prefer to allow my article to evolve organically, and I certainly will not be involved in that process. If you are amenable, I would appreciate the one figure allowed for my article to be the book cover whose image I uploaded to my Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nX1kYcaw2-SkXAKVn5qnpLWAHDAuz7yR. - AWCzarnik (talk) 14:44, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The book cover has been uploaded and added to your article as you requested. However, another editor removed the link to your Wikipedia account as it is unsourced, but you have been added to the Wikipedia:Wikipedians with articles list instead. Cheers! Feel free to ping me on other change requests. - Indefensible (talk) 03:41, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I do have another request. I recently posted a question at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:YassineMrabet#Question_about_image_of_tartaric_acid_crystals. At the end of my question I found my UserName (AWCzarnik) in red, informing me that the User:AWCzarnik page does not exist. I'm pretty sure such a page was created when I created my User account. Can you discover why that page does not exist now? Thanks. AWCzarnik (talk) 11:53, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure, I don't spend too much time on Wikimedia personally. The Wikimedia profile is not mirrored by your Wikipedia page though, you have to create it on both Wikipedia and Wikimedia separately, although if you only have a Wikimedia profile then I believe it defaults to that on Wiki's other connected sites. There doesn't seem to be a record of your Wikimedia profile in the logs: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=User:AWCzarnik. - Indefensible (talk) 06:17, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why I did not see your message previously, hope you are doing well. Yes, we can see about getting that image reuploaded again.
