Turtle Wax, Inc. (known simply as Turtle Wax) is an American manufacturer of automotive appearance (car care) products. The company was founded by Benjamin Hirsch in Chicago in 1941[2] and is currently headquartered in Lombard, Illinois, having relocated from Addison, Illinois in 2024.

The Turtle Wax story started with the launch of the first-ever bottled car wax in 1946, created by Hirsch himself (in a bathtub, no less). More than 75 years later, America’s favorite car care brand is still capturing the attention of the auto appearance category as the No. 1* selling brand in spray wax, detailers, and compounds and polishes.

With product distribution in more than 120 countries, the Turtle Wax brand resonates around the globe, but the brand’s heart remains in its hometown of Chicago, where award-winning innovation is developed to this day.

While Hirsch passed away in 1966, successive generations of his family have remained involved with the company, even today.[3][4] With that, it is still family-owned and operated.

Products[edit]

As of 2017, Turtle Wax primarily serves the retail consumer market; the company's primary product lines include cleaning and polishing products for cars including glass, painted surfaces, uncoated metals, leather, wheels, tires, and more. The brand has even ventured into air care, with various hanging air fresheners and air refresher foggers.

In 2019, the brand introduced its Hybrid Solutions product range. The line reflects the brand's more technology-forward, premium offerings, with ingredients such as ceramic. In short time, Hybrid Solutions has expanded to over fifteen products and has made its way around the world in terms of distribution.

In 2023, Turtle Wax partnered with world-renowned tattoo and street artist Mister Cartoon to create a new line of products, The Art of Car Care. The line features original hand-drawn labels from Cartoon himself, unique packaging, and disruptive products like a tire cleaner infused with optical brighteners to make whitewalls or white lettering pop on the types of tires commonly found within the lowrider community. The Art of Car Care also includes a series of air care products.

The company sold its Professional Products arm focused on professional detailer and commercial car wash customers to Cambridge, Ontario based Transchem Inc. in 2013.[5] Turtle Wax has marketed its cleaning products for non-automotive applications, as well.[6]

Turtle Wax also offers automotive performance chemicals such as engine treatment products and formula oils under the Marvel Mystery Oil and CD-2 brands. Additionally, the company operates full-service car wash facilities in the Chicago Metropolitan area.[7]

The Turtle Wax Pro brand is now separately operated by Transchem Group based in Cambridge, ON, Canada.[8]
