Talk:Korean mixed script

Advantages?[edit]

What are the perceived advantages of mixed script? To me, it just seems more complicated. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 16:40, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's not used anymore; when it was, it was because Chinese script was not appropriate for representing spoken Korean and thus people had to add in Korean writing for function words (similar situation as that of Japanese, which still does use mixed script). Some psycholinguists also claimed that it made reading easier since you could focus your attention on content words and bypass function words. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 10:39, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know how it was used. Just curious on why someone would want it back. I see the point of simplifying reading, but I think it would be simpler with spaces. ;) 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 10:54, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would imagine people who want it back (if there are such people) want it back not for linguistically-motivated reasons, but for political, cultural, or nostalgic reasons. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 10:55, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yeah, probably. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 10:58, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've been studying Japanese for a couple of years and it is actually much easier to understand a word written in kanji (if you know the kanji) than in hiragana. Maybe it's because when a word is written in a phonetic system you have to decipher several characters, recreate the sound in your mind and only then try to associate that sound-chain with a meaning. On the other hand, when you see a kanji, you see the meaning right away. You don't even have to remember how the word sounds. I ignore the scientific basis of this, but the advantages mentioned in the article seem true in my experience. --Simiyachaq (talk) 20:32, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • OP, you are a hypocrite! You have a Japanese username and don't even know that Japanese still employ this system on a daily basis. The advantages are given in the answer above mine. --2.246.82.154 (talk) 05:31, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Uneditable error[edit]

Strange that the little window at the beginning of this article showing a sample of the topic would have "Direction: Left to right," when the sample pictured is actually in the usual format of top to bottom, right to left. That line is uneditable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kilaueabart (talkcontribs) 02:56, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a caption, but rather referring to a general property of the script itself. Opencooper (talk) 07:23, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Section move proposal[edit]

I propose that subsections Hanja: Hanmun and Adaptation of hanja to Korean of this article be moved to Hanja § History. There is nothing in these sections on Korean mixed script, but the material is related directly to the history of hanja. —  AjaxSmack  21:27, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense, and as it relates more to hanja than mixed script moving it might be an uncontroversial move. If someone disagrees they can always revert you later and discuss it then. To me the section seems very much about hanja thus would have more place there. --Donald Trung (talk) 21:32, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
