Ramgarh (Bengali: রামগড়) is an upazila of Khagrachari District[1] in the Division of Chattogram, Bangladesh.

History[edit]

This was part of ancient Pundra Kingdom.

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 for the liberation of Bangladesh, when Pakistan Army created the 91st ad hoc brigade as part of the 39th Division to hold on to this area and to defend north of Chittagong, but these ad hoc formations lacked the staff and equipment of regular formations.[2] Pakistan Army's 93,000 troops unconditionally surrendered to the Indian Army and India's local ally Mukti Bahini on 16 December 1971.[3] This day and event is commemorated as the Bijoy Dibos (Bengali: বিজয় দিবস) in Bangladesh and Vijay Diwas in India.[4][3]

Ramgarh is located at 22°58′00″N 91°42′00″E / 22.9667°N 91.7000°E / 22.9667; 91.7000. It has 10.478 households and total area 199.83 km2.[citation needed]

As of the 2011 Bangladesh census, the residual Ramgarh upazila had 10,468 households and a population of 50,744. 13,342 (26.29%) were under 10 years of age. Ramgarh had an average literacy rate of 47.24%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 965 females per 1000 males. 37,033 (72.98%) of the population lived in urban areas.[5] The ethnic population was 14,558 (28.69%), of which Tripura were 6,991, Marma 5,975 and Chakma 1,451.[6]

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Ramgarh has a population of 44,217. Males constitute 53.01% of the population, and females 46.99%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 22,854. Ramgarh has an average literacy rate of 29.1% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[7]

Administration[edit]

Ramgarh Upazila is divided into Ramgarh Municipality and two union parishads: Pathachhara, and Ramgarh. The union parishads are subdivided into 6 mauzas and 136 villages.[8]

Ramgarh Municipality is subdivided into 9 wards and 29 mahallas.[8]
