| Description | Nederlands: Bronzen standbeeld van Spinoza, w:nl:Zwanenburgwal, Amsterdam met een levende duif op het hoofd en afgebeelde halsbandparkieten en huismussen op zijn mantel, als een symbool van de tolerantie van Amsterdam voor immigranten. Het werd ingewijd op 24 november 2008 (de 376e geboortedag van Spinoza) door de burgemeester van Amsterdam, Job Cohen en cultuurwethouder Carolien Gehrels. Het beeld staat op een ovaal podium met randschrift "Het doel van de staat is de vrijheid", een citaat uit Spinoza's boek Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670, 1677). Het ovalen podium verwijst naar de ellipsbanen van onze planeten. Naast hem een icosaëder (regelmatig twintigvlak), symbool voor het slijpen van de geest/een model van het heelal? The statue was inaugurated on November 24, 2008 (the 376th birthday of Spinoza) by the mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen and Cultural Councillor Carolien Gehrels. Inscription at the oval dais of the base: "Het doel van de staat is de vrijheid", a quote from Spinoza's book Tractatus theologico-politicus (1670, 1677). (Translation: The purpose of the state is freedom.) The oval dais refers to elliptical planetary orbits. An icosahedron (polyhedron with 20 faces) is put next to Spinoza - not visible on this photograph. |
