Summary

Description
English: Captain Gideon Olmsted, who went to sea as a 20 year old farmboy. In 1776 the British captured him during a privateering voyage on his vessel the Seaflower, abused him as a prisoner for six months in Haiti and Jamaica, finally he contrived to ship aboard the sloop Active to return home. On her way to New York he instigated a mutiny and seized the Active--but on her way to America she was taken by a Pennsylvania privateer. Olmsted then spent the next 30 years litigating the claim for his prize. Portrait painted about 1810.
