Summary

Description
English: Transport Heritage Site Red Plaque at Hythe Pier, an ancient ferry crossing first recorded in 1575; accessed since 1922 by the oldest pier railway in continuous service in the world. It still today carries commuters from Hythe on the western (New Forest) shore of Southampton Water across the busy shipping lanes to berth in Southampton at Town Quay, at the foot of Southampton's High Street business district. Greener and more environmentally sustainable than the lengthy journey by road.
