Phillip the Handsome

Correction: The family tree submitted by Mark Jackson shows that the son of Maximilian was Philip of Castile. This is in fact incorrect. Philip laid claim to the title of King of Castile through his marriage to Joanna of Castile, daughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. However, Joanna was formally invested with Crown of Castile by her parents upon the deaths of her older brother, Juan of Asturias, and her elder sisters, Maria and Isabel, and the death of Maria's heir, Miguel. In order for a consort to be invested as heir to the throne of Castile under their laws, a series of meetings with the Cortes, their form of Parliament, would had to have taken place, with a clear majority of the Cortes voting in favour on investment. While the meetings did take place, the formal investment did not. At this time, Isabella had died and while Joanna was the legal heir to the throne, her father, King Ferdinand, and her husband, Prince Philip, spread rumours about the kingdom that she was unfit to rule (specifically that she was insane), and therefore the crown was hotly contested between them for many years, until Philip died of syphilis in 1506. Joanna was imprisoned in the fortress of Tordesillas until her death in 1555. The crown passed to Joanna's son, Charles, indisputable heir to both the thrones of Castile, Aragon, and all of the then Imperial possessions.
