In- und ausländische Kaufleute trafen dort regelmäßig zusammen und tätigten Handels- und Wechselgeschäfte. Vom Familiennamen der Kaufmannsfamilie wurde das niederländische Wort beurs (deutsch: Börse) als Bezeichnung für derartige Handelsplätze abgeleitet und entsprechend in andere europäischen Sprachen übernommen.
