Chetan Tierra is an American concert pianist, composer, and teacher. He is an official Yamaha artist and is best known for his competitive performances.[1] He was the 2009 runner-up in Hilton Head International Piano Competition,[2] José Iturbi International Music Competition,[3] and Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.[4][5] He made his Carnegie Hall debut in November 2006.[6]

Tierra serves as the artist-in-residence at the San Diego Piano Academy, co-founded with his wife Melissa Tierra.[7]

Early life and education[edit]

Tierra gave his inaugural public performance at six and developed his skills under the guidance of his father Michael Tierra. His early education was facilitated by Hans Boepple and later, Antonio Pompa-Baldi at the Cleveland Institute of Music.[8][9]

Career[edit]

Tierra has won over twenty competition prizes.[10] He won second prize at the 2009 Hilton Head International Piano Competition and third prize at the 2008 José Iturbi International Music Competition. He has also earned top prizes in competitions like the New Orleans International Piano Competition and the California International Young Artists' Competition.[11]

As a soloist, Tierra has collaborated with orchestras such as Portugal's Viana do Castelo Music Festival Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Santa Cruz Symphony, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra at the Brevard Music Festival.[12][13]

Tierra's Carnegie Hall debut in 2006 garnered acclaim, described as "magnificent" by the New York Concert Review. He was also a semi-finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition.[11]

In addition to his solo career, Tierra was a member of the alternative rock band "Auralis" and co-founded "The Mosaic Quartet" in 2009.[14] The band attracted the attention of Grammy-winning producer T-Bone Burnett. The band released their first full-length record in 2013.[15]

From 2015 to 2019, He was part of the art pop band called Skyterra and won 'Best New Artist' at the San Diego Music Awards in 2017.[16][17]
