The Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the North-East Region of Singapore. It has 5 wards: Teck Ghee, Buangkok–Fernvale South, Seletar–Serangoon, Cheng San and Ang Mo Kio–Hougang, managed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council. The current Members of Parliament are Darryl David, Nadia Ahmad Samdin, Jasmin Lau, Victor Lye and Lee Hsien Loong from the People's Action Party (PAP).
History
[edit]Prior to the 1997 general election, the GRC was expanded to five members from four.
During the 2006 general election, the GRC was considered a battleground as the GRC faced its first electoral contest in which a group of Workers' Party (WP) Gen X candidates led by Yaw Shin Leong contested against the PAP, [1] in which PAP anchor lead and PM Lee called it as a "敢死队" (suicide squad) and WP claimed they were not pushovers.[2] Eventually, the PAP won the election with only 66.14% of the vote, slightly lower than the 66.6% of the national vote against the Workers' Party's 33.86% of the vote.
During the 2025 general election, the GRC saw its first three way contest between incumbent PAP, People's Power Party (PPP) and new party Singapore United Party (SUP).[3] The PAP team, led by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, won the contest with almost 79% of the vote with the other two parties receiving around 10% each.[4] For failing to secure at least 12.5% of the vote, both PPP and SUP forfeited their election deposits.[4]
Constituency profile
[edit]The constituency encompasses the majority of Ang Mo Kio (Teck Ghee, Cheng San, portions of Yio Chu Kang), Seletar Hills, the northern half of Serangoon North, a portion of northern Hougang and a portion of Fernvale. The western portion consists of parts of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. It is served by the MRT stations of Yio Chu Kang and Ang Mo Kio in the west, and the LRT stations of Layar and Fernvale on the Sengkang LRT line in Fernvale.
