Welcome to my talk page! Please feel free to leave a message here, or email me if you prefer; however, if you post here you I ask that you observe the following requests:

  • Place new messages at the bottom of the page, not at the top. This preserves the chronological order for the page.
  • Separate topic sections with a ==Descriptive header==
  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~).
  • BE POLITE. I am a person, not a computer. I do have feelings, and they can be hurt.
  • Solicitors are welcome here, but do not twist my arm to do something. It's my decision, not yours.
  • If you need/want my input on a matter outside of this page then please leave a link to the page in question.
  • Did I delete your page? For CSD, click here; for AFD click here and follow the instructions.
  • Do not post in the archive(s). I will not answer any post placed on a page that is mothballed.
  • Unless otherwise noted I will respond on your talk page, not mine.

TCG Close query[edit]

Hello,

I was reviewing the close of this ANI close and wanted to query/raise concerns at a couple of points.

  1. The limited TBAN-scope: afaict, the vast majority of users participating were a full support for the original (full) TBAN proposal rather than with the modifier unless explicitly invited to comment on the subject by editors on a given talk page. What in the discussion led to that being exempted out?
  2. Editors encountering suspected socks of TheCurrencyGuy are required to log their suspicions at the aforementioned SPI page for documentation in addition to reporting them at WP:ANI for breach of this account restriction. - this feels like a potentially onerous obligation on all wikipedia editors (one that only a few will be aware of), and as such would be extremely rare to have in a close. Here, while TCG appears to have been Joe-jobbed at one point, I'm aware of some reasoning for this point but again there's no community consensus for it in the thread. In more practical terms, lots of sock blocks are made without launching both an SPI investigation and an ANI thread for breaching a community restriction underpinning it and so this would be a potential disruption there.
  3. While timing and requirement to link to this ANI thread in any future appeals by TCG made sense, I was again wondering about the obligation to ping everyone - is there a TCG issue that underpinned this? Had a feeling that I might have been missing something from a prior discussion.

The upshot of which is a request to explain what consensus in the discussion led to these aspects being part of your close, or to amend the close as appropriate. Cheers, Nosebagbear (talk) 15:39, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

TCG's topic ban[edit]

Hello, I am contacting you since you closed TheCurrencyGuy's topic ban discussion.

I would (eventually) like to start a multi-question RfC on TCG's mass, currency-related changes (e.g. changing the nomenclature of the Czech currency from "koruna" to "crown"), to see whether the Community (retroactively) consents to their changes.

However, with a tban in place, I am reluctant to hold such an RfC unless TCG is allowed to participate and defend their past actions (even if their participation is limited). Therefore, would you be happy with the following?

  1. I start the RfC with the requisite questions.
  2. Propose that TCG be allowed to participate.
  3. Wait for a consensus before proceeding with the rest of the RfC.

Thanks in advance, NotReallySoroka (talk) 18:04, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:26, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Hello TomStar81,

The case request about WikiMedia Foundation involvement in software deployment on the English Wikipedia has been declined by a majority of Wikipedia's arbitrators.

The request had been explicitly created as an "Ignore All Rules" request, but the Arbitration Committee disagrees about a need for ignoring its policies, which exclude "official actions of the Wikimedia Foundation or its staff" from its jurisdiction and define it as "as a final binding decision-maker primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve" in the "Scope and responsibilities" section. Its procedures describe an "expectation of prior dispute resolution" that hasn't been fulfilled yet.

For the Arbitration Committee,

FAR for USS Wisconsin[edit]

I have nominated USS Wisconsin (BB-64) for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. Same as the Missouri one from last year - just needs some tidying up to polish stuff up and introduce some non-DANFS viewpoints (and maybe some more detail on the design, as was requested at the Missouri one. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes.
