Mathematics CotW[edit]

Hey Deep, I am writing you to let you know that the Mathematics Collaboration of the week(soon to "of the month") is getting an overhaul of sorts and I would encourage you to participate in whatever way you can, i.e. nominate an article, contribute to an article, or sign up to be part of the project. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks--Cronholm144 21:07, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Great userpage!

Hello, Deeptrivia. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:DalaiLama.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Deeptrivia/Inspiration. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Hi deeptrivia, I finally have some time to start doing a major revision of the page (recall your comments), which I had originally planned to do much earlier (after the RfC in March). I hope you'll have some time to look in every now and then and offer criticism, or if you have more time, help with the revision itself. Thanks. Converts[edit]

Please read this. Arrow740 03:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The verb "to convert" has two uses. The first is intransitive, and that is how it was used in Buddhism and Hinduism. In this sense it means to change one's own religion. The other sense is transitive, and then it means to induce someone else to change his religion. In this sense, it is a synonym for the verb "to proselytize." In Indian English the verb "to proselytize" is basically obsolete and it has been replaced with "to convert" in the transitive sense {{fact}]. However in standard English "convert" is almost always used in the first sense [citation needed]. In that sense there can be no objection; Ashoka converted to Buddhism after experiencing sadness after a battle[citation needed], Guru Angad Dev converted[citation needed] to Sikhism after hearing sermons of Guru Nanak, etc. In fact all the Dharmic religions were at some point in their history proselytizing religions[citation needed]. Buddhism still is[citation needed]. That's why[citation needed] Buddhism is spreading among non-Asians in the West. However this aspect of Buddhism is not nearly as pronounced as in Christianity and Islam. Hinduism was once a very active proselytizing religion[citation needed], though Hindus were mostly interested in converting other Indians. At one time, most of India was Buddhist (because of Buddhist monks spreading the message and convincing people to convert[citation needed]). It was partially due to the work of Hindu proselytizers such as Adi Shankara (but mostly due to the Muslim hordes) that Buddhism almost completely died out in India. Arrow740 05:17, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, note that the Dalai Lama is only the leader of one sect[citation needed] of Tibetan Buddhists. Arrow740 05:24, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with two articles within the scope of Indian cinema project

Dabboo Ratnani needs a proper bio, an infobox, and of course a complete list of celebrities who appeared through the years on his famous calendar. The sample image from his calendar also needs more critical commentary with references. Ananthabhadram needs quite some work, too, though I can't really pinpoint the problems yet. Don't be hasty

Map

My idea is to show all of Ladakh highlighted in semi-transparent light red or reddish-orange. Indian-administered Ladakh would then be shaded as it is now (semi-transparent dark red). If we did this, then the article would need to be NPOVed by stating both in the lead and infobox that Ladakh is divided between the PRC and India. The infobox would have a "Countries" field (like in {{Geobox River}} or {{Geobox Mountain Range}}; see Ganges or Andes for examples) that lists both India and the PRC. To make sure about this, Nichalp and Planemad should be consulted, since they are more familiar with this sort of stuff. Thanks. Saravask 05:22, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prod:"Aryan religion"

I have added a "{{prod}}" template has been added to the article Aryan religion, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.

Deeptrivia, I wanted to clarify that I initiated the definitional discussion on the Hinduism talk page, not because I though your edit was "wrong", but rather because I though that it raised a substantiative issue that perhaps we need to establish consensus over. Seeking opinion from regular editors on reference pattern

References: Notes and citations section; change in reference and notes temporarily ceased; WP:FOOT says I am not doing wrong; Separate Notes and Citation sections

Opinion is sought from regular editors of the article Hinduism regarding the splitting of Notes and references section. This is a short gist of the discussions going on in the above mentioned talk links: Having a separate "Notes" (for explanatory remarks) and "Citations" (for direct citations), although permitted, is relatively rare in Wikipedia, and also in academic journals. The main rationale behind doing this is to distinguish a series of explanatory remarks from the series of citations (please see Rabindranath Tagore, Demosthenes for examples).

This sandbox gives a glimpse of how the article would look if we split the sections (the sandbox is under work, so may not be perfect). This link shows how the article looks with combined section. This may give an idea how it looked when I started working on references. I converted many references to Harvard format, apart from splitting the sections.

Opinion for regular editors are sought regarding the application of splitting of two section for this article. Please do so in Talk:Hinduism in the section Talk:Hinduism#Seeking_opinion_from_regular_editors_on_reference_pattern. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:02, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Pashupati.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Pashupati.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 00:38, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Higherself.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Higherself.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Determinant sign

Deeptrivia,
I came across the question you had posed at the Math ref. desk. While I don't have a direct answer for why the computation of is so numerically sensitive (although I suspect it has to do with the ill-conditioning of A), I was intrigued by an even more basic problem: Why does matlab find rank(A) = 6, while clearly it should be ≤5, since the fourth and fifth columns of the matrix are identical ?

Indo greek page

Deeptrivia,

It is truly unfortunate that someone who spends as much time on the indian articles as you do is enabling PHG's systematic biasing of indian articles. He claims every indian accomplishment and dynasty under the sun as products of the greeks (chalukyas = seleucids, sikander al sani on khilji's coins = greek coinage influence? come on). Worst of all, he is stomping out dissent on the various perspetives on the indo greek period. To him, nothing less than the entire northern half of the subcontinent must have been ruled by the indo greeks--a preposterous notion considering there is no archaeological evidence to substantiate that. in fact, even european scholars (see talk page "End of the road for the Indo Greeks" acknowledge that it is foolish to proclaim colonial theories as writ without hard evidence coming to the fore. If you are going to involve yourself into the debate, at least have the decency to address the legitimate questions raised by those who actually want objective history in these articles.

Thank you for Image:SwastikaCurve.png. I have a request. I wonder if you would consider making the lines thicker and the bounding box around the curve a bit smaller, so that the curve shows up better on the Swastika Curve article. Now it is kind of hard to see.

May be you are right, but I am pretty convinced that Greater India, Indies, Undivided India and Indosphere are by and large variations of the same subject, and can very well be merged together to make for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Currently the understanding of the extent of Indian civilization in the past and in the present is spread over a number of rather short articles, which make for a somewhat diminished understanding. I have an intention to merge all that together. May be you can lend your advises or a hand there. Please, reply to my talk page. Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:20, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I guess I'll pass the classical part. Will it be alright if I start merging the other articles (Indosphere not included)? And, in that case, I see little point in having a separate article for Indianized kingdoms and Indosphere. All these articles can be forked and split as and when they grow. My target is a simple one - creating an easy access to global India, which also includes the Indian diaspora. Any ideas? Aditya(talkcontribs) 07:26, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect of Nonhuman

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Nonhuman, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Nonhuman is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Nonhuman, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Argument against Afghanistan

Atari400 is, in my opinion falsely, claiming that Afghanistan and Balochistan are not part of the Indosphere. I do not agree with him at all. Seeing that you monitor the Indosphere page, can you throw in your two cents on debate. This debate started on the Indosphere countries/territories template, and moments ago I transferred the entrie template talk page onto the indosphere article talk page. Thegreyanomaly (talk) 10:41, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. It appears that you are actively trying to "stack the consensus". You may see my opinion as being false, but your's comes across as rather nationalistic, and perhaps can even interpreted as bigoted by some. Atari400 18:04, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Bless you! I find reversions and deletions so frustrating! I'll make a short section for the Ganesha article and I'll link to Hindu Milk Miracle, an article I didn't know existed. Hooray! David G Brault (talk) 05:15, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:GULFINR.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:GULFINR.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. I briefly tagged this for speedy deletion, then reversed my decision; it doesn't seem to me to have a lot of notability, but I note that you're working in this area and have a long history with this type of article. AfD nomination of Indosphere[edit]

An editor has nominated Indosphere, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Indosphere and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shi'a-Sunni sectarianism! What next?

Wikipedia has always had its fair share of disputes. The issues surrounding debates like creationism-evolutionism had been a source of many edit wars. But recently enough, the ball-of-chaos had landed in our very own court. Pakistani issues are now polluted with a new sectarianism, especially the biographical articles celebrating some of the most influential people in Pakistani politics. These edit wars annoyed administrators who had no idea how the problems should be dealt with. Instances of religious inclination (either Shi'a Islam or Sunni Islam) were changed from one or the other. Debates have kicked off on the WP Pakistan talk page. Recently enough, a new policy has come into discussion (actually, it's just a set of rules) that defines major guidlines for such issues. It now awaits votes from all Pakistani editors.

In other news: Akhtar Hameed Khan has finally reached the FA status and Islescape is the happiest person on Earth.

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Pashupati.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:33, 15 August 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 (talk) 06:33, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiDharma[edit]

Hi!

I didn't realise this project existed!

I had the idea to set up a WikiDharma.org. That actual domain name is held by a domain farmer but I have bought and parked related names. I don't want to reinvent the [Dharma] Wheel or throw away work that has already been done.

What I have done to date is create an outline of the type of content that I think would be useful for a WikiDharma. A full project plan for WikiDharma is here: http://herdingkatsu.blogspot.com/

Maybe there is some food for thought in there or maybe not.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Budha Yantra.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Budha Yantra.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:08, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Chandra img.jpg.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:09, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
