Question[edit]

In recent days, Wikipedia has come in conflict with important figures from the Hindu-Nationalist sections of Indian population, who wield a significant influence on the incumbent Government of India.[1][2][3] Tech-journalists have documented moves seeking to intimidate online platforms into submission.[4] Twitter found itself in a similar soup and their officials were harassed by GOI[5][6], leading some to resign.[7] Press-freedom has deteriorated in an unprecedented manner and dissent is now sedition.[8][9]

Do you think that my characterization of the situation is fair? If so, do you have anything to say on how the shifting-away of India from a meaningful democracy[10][11][12] might hamper your discharge of duties? TrangaBellam (talk) 14:49, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I am not well-versed about the functions you are going to perform, upon a successful election. I am yet to read everything but the application does not seem to be for some kind of chief-editor post.
I still feel that my question is relevant. TrangaBellam (talk) 16:46, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to User:TrangaBellam[edit]

Thank you, @TrangaBellam: for your question which I have just read. I would be reading your references and get back to you with a specific answer to your queries. In the meantime, you can access info about what the Board does concisely here and here. I would like to point out, in case you hadn't noticed so far, the job of daily governance and responding to changes in a country's policy are that of the Wikimedia Foundation Staff under the leadership of the CEO, not the Board of Trustees which I am standing for. In the interim, till I get back to you with an answer, stay safe, and happy editing. :) AshLin (talk) 05:45, 7 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did you get time? TrangaBellam (talk) 13:45, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @TrangaBellam:, the articles that you linked support your view about erosion of democratic values and rise in intolerance in India. It is true that right-wing editors in India are edit-warring to push their point of view over others, with this in some cases spilling on to doxxing fellow editors, threats of violence and stalking. Their point of view and acts are also supported by functionaries of the ruling party. Since the duties of a Board of Trustee are supervisory of WMF and mainly concerned with long term policy, responding to the legal connotations in India of the recent Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (2021 Rules) remains that of WMF. On the other hand, should I be elected and find myself in conflict with Indian law or put in such position of having to compromise my values, I will prefer to resign. I hope this answers your question. AshLin (talk) 03:39, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BIBFRAME[edit]

Thanks for flagging that article. I was actually responding on the talk page but edit-conflicted with your removal. One reason that I believed this was a case of reverse copying from Wikipedia was that I looked at some other entries, and our articles on Carla Hayden, Charles Ammi Cutter, Ex Libris Group, Information science, and Knowledge all contained text that is duplicated at [1]. I found it implausible that all of those would have been copied from that website. That, plus they've been apparently updating the page throughout the years without changing the "2015" in the URL. DanCherek (talk) 02:10, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you @DanCherek:. Its so nice to find a case where the possible copyvio is by the website and not by the Wikipedian. I was quite taken aback because the author's other work doesn't indicate a likelihood of copyvio. Ashwin Baindur (User:AshLin) (talk) 02:16, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Message by Moitranaak[edit]

Hullo, Shri Baindur I am reproducing your remarks on my talk page: I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (Moitraanak (talk) 12:10, 17 September 2021 (UTC)); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! AshLin (talk) 16:06, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It appears you haven't been welcomed so you aren't quite up to the mark regarding wikipedia methods and practices. Hope this helps. AshLin (talk) 16:06, 6 July 2020 (UTC) PS - the legacy mail was crowding it up and seeing that you probably may not be aware how to archive your talk, I have taken the liberty to move the old talk posts to this archive. Should you not prefer that to happen you can revert this through the page history. I'm a services veteran from India too. Let me know if you need help of any kind. AshLin (talk) 16:29, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

I became a Wikipedia editor in 2007 under a different name, but switched to my current ID in 2014. I think I have made>1,000 edits using my current ID. My welcome tab is live, so please take it easy. For a start, stop being so annoyingly condescending. I have stopped using my customised green signature and am back with the standard four tildes. Have a great day. Moitraanak (talk) 12:21, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Message from Global Aspiration[edit]

Thank you for working on my article, I was actually attempting to withdraw the submission as advised by Dave notMD, as I don't have time to rework it just at the moment. The United Aspiration concept is developing rapidly and I am involved in the think tank. Much of the article seems to have now been deleted, I am unsure whether this means that you have decided that was not suitable, your messages did not imply that it was quite that bad. A couple of queries that you may be able to assist with, I am unclear whether I am allowed hyperlinks, if not I presume that I need to embed an explanation into my article. Secondly I had hoped to include a graph from some published research, but I was not sure if it is permitted. Global Aspiration (talk) 15:00, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Global Aspiration:, unwittingly, you are likely to be in violation of Wikipedia policies, such as Conflict of Interest and No Original Research. Please read these because it appears I recommend that you halt editing this article until you learn the practices and editing culture of Wikipedia, because while you may have domain knowledge about the topic and mean well, you are at present uninformed about the rules and policies and also about what comprises a good encyclopedic article, much less how to write one. Writing a Wikipedia article is considered a feat to be attempted once you have got your basics right, not from your very first edit onward. I recommend reading all the links in the welcome message and making a number of edits on other articles.
As regards Draft:Ecological Overshoot, I will keep gradually improving it so that reaches a state which is acceptable. Once you have remedied this issue and progress beyond your newbie status, you may like to progress it by adding one referenced fact at a time, keeping the structure in mind.
As regards your queries, hyperlinks are not permitted in the main text, you can use them by putting them in citations and notes instead. Only wikilinking is encouraged in the main article text as a matter of style.
The graph to be included needs to licensed in its original source under a license that is acceptable to Wikimedia Commons, that is CC-BY, CC-BY-SA or Public Domain. Alternately, it needs to be your own work which you upload to Wikimedia Commons. Please see this page: guidance about Wikimedia Commons
I know much of this sounds daunting at first because the so many issues involved, but I recommend learning the basics incrementally and increasing your editing skill and domain knowledge over time. Happy editing, 07:38, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

I have put in yet another name change request, although 'global aspiration' is not an organisation or a company it may well be one day soon. Your talk page seems different to the last time I accessed it, the big yellow box was not there last time. Easier to use today. Global Aspiration (talk) 14:02, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My Ecological Overshoot article looks much improved thank you. Your talk page seems easier to use today, the big yellow 'click here' box did not appear the last time I visited this page. The 'united aspiration' which appears at the end of the article can be described more simply as follows: Our Declaration of Human Rights and our political and models do not provide any encouragement to remain within the ecological boundaries of our locality. It has been suggested that we need to agree a global Aspiration to encourage global communities to limit their enterprise within their ecological boundaries.

September 2021 Guild of Copy Editors newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Re. Tag & Assess[edit]

Hi, Saw your msg only now. Tag&Assess India was long overdue..thks for initiating it. Was trying to participate but neither of the scripts, Rater.js or the yuvipanda tool, are getting activated for me. Yuvipand script was already there from the 2012 campaign. Any idea why this would be happening? --Sesamevoila (talk) 08:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
