Links from characters[edit]

Previous discussion: WT:WikiProject Disambiguation#Emoji disambiguation page

There seem to be varying opinions as to where wikilinks from individual Unicode characters should lead. When the character code is the title of an article (rare) or a redirect to an article (common), it is sensible to link directly to the character code, ready to reflect any future change in the redirect. When the character's meaning is covered in multiple articles, we should link to a disambiguation page. However, per WP:INTDAB, we should not link directly to the disambiguation page or via a redirect named for the character; instead we should link via a redirect ending in " (disambiguation)".

Having reverted a couple of attempts which did not achieve these goals, I think that this version by 95.187.224.164 (talk) works well and should be kept. It leads to the correct destinations for Pistol, CL and UP!, and it adds useful new links to Square, Circle, etc. Any other opinions, please? Certes (talk) 11:17, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has suggested that we avoid redlinks and redirects to an article related to the object, and only link if we have an article about the actual character. Of course, the issue applies beyond the emoji block. Certes (talk) 12:15, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pensive[edit]

@J947: I'm curious why U+1F614 PENSIVE FACE needs a span id in the chart template. None of the other 143,923 Unicode characters have a span id in the various chart templates. If you want to reference just U+1F614 I'd suggest using the unichar template, like U+1F614 😔 PENSIVE FACE. And because templates can be transcluded from multiple pages, I'd worry that the span id in the Emoji (Unicode block) template might not be unique based on the page calling it. Move suggestion: not a block[edit]

@Vanisaac: thanks for making clear that it is not a Block ;-). May I suggest to change the articlename (Move). For starters, DAB-addition (Unicode block) should not be used (not even in a redirect IMO). Then, the new name preferably be specific. Like: Unicode chart Emojis, or Unicode chart single emojis (uc, lc?). Boldness or Thoughts? DePiep (talk) 05:55, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Preferred: Unicode chart single emojis.-DePiep (talk) 10:08, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Unicode chart single emojis" is definitely an improvement. "Unicode chart emoji code points" would also work for me. DRMcCreedy (talk) 15:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How about template: Unicode emoji chart? VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 04:30, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Starting with "Unicode chart ..." is the pattern for the charts, very helpful (also for non-blocks). Category:Unicode charts (327). So: I prefer this pattern.
Blocks all have pattern "Unicode chart <block name, using uc>" (except for non-char blocks like PUA: block page exists, but not its chart).
Note: today all formal block names exist in pattern "[[<block name> (Unicode block)]]", either as content page or as redirect. Category:Unicode blocks (344) -DePiep (talk) 06:00, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
