The 2024 European Parliament election in Portugal will elect the Portuguese delegation to the European Parliament from 2024 to 2029. This will be the ninth European Parliament election held in Portugal. The election will be held on Sunday, 9 June 2024.[1]
This election takes place just three months after the 10 March 2024 legislative election, which resulted in a very narrow win for the Democratic Alliance, thus is being seen as a "second round" of the March elections.[2]
Background[edit]
Electoral system[edit]
The voting method to be used, for the election of European members of parliament, is by proportional representation using the D'Hondt method. For the 2024 European Parliament elections, Portugal has 21 seats to fill. Members of Parliament are elected in a single constituency, corresponding to the entire national territory.
Date[edit]
The proposed election day, 9 June, conflicted with the Portugal Day holiday on 10 June, plus several other local holidays. The government feared that an election close to so many holidays would suppress turnout[3] and attempted to find a compromise with EU countries to find an alternative date, but, no unanimity was reached and the election was then expected to be held on 9 June.[4]
On 4 April 2024, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that the election will be held on 9 June 2024.[5]
Early voting[edit]
Voters are also able to vote early, which will happen on 2 June, one week before election day. Voters have to register between 26 and 30 May 2024 in order to be eligible to cast an early ballot.[6] By the 30 May deadline, 252,208 voters had requested to vote early, a number thirteen times higher than in 2019, and also higher than in the 2024 March legislative election.[7]

Campaign[edit]
Issues[edit]
The campaign is being dominated by issues like Immigration and Defense,[26] with national politics also an issue due to the narrow victory of the Democratic Alliance in the 10 March legislative elections and the unstable situation of Luís Montenegro's minority government, with the prospect of a possible snap election in the short term.[2]

Opinion polling[edit]
Polls that show their results without distributing those respondents who are undecided or said they would abstain from voting, are re-calculated by removing these numbers from the totals through a simple rule of three, in order to obtain results comparable to other polls and the official election results.
